Her name comes from the word Calamity which means a great disaster or misfortune. It was given to her by her people; a small clan of "watchers" who live high up in the mountains. There is a belief that one born on the night of a thunder storm will bring about the destruction of the clan... even so, her people allowed her to live with them.
She was born without the ability to speak.
The role of the watchers in the mountains is to keep an eye on the nearby villages and to assist those who are passing through. The clan elder was known for being very wise, so people sometimes came to their village seeking knowledge. Kalamidi would watch these people curiously. She often unnerved visitors with her silent presence.
Then one day, a rock slide destroyed half the village. The one who was blamed for this was the bringer of destruction: Kalamidi. She was forced to leave her village, and she descended the mountains alone. For three years she lived in seclusion deep inside the forest near the base of the mountains, never approaching anyone who passed through. She kept watch over the travelers while they were in the forest because this was what she had been taught to do ever since she was a youngster.
She believed herself to be a curse on her village and worried that she might harm someone else, so she chose to live a life of seclusion, at least until she met him.
--
There was a lot of noise coming from somewhere deep in the forest. The sound of splintering wood and cracking branches. Kalamidi raced through the underbrush, worried that there might be something wrong. She stopped at the edge of the clearing and stared.
Standing in the middle of the small clearing was a lone Waradore, and all around him were the shattered remains of small trees and bushes. Some of the larger trees had received deep gashes in their bark. He flexed one of his hands and winced. "Darn it..." he muttered.
Feeling very curious, Kalamidi began to watch the stranger's daily ritual of destroying the trees and plants in the area until one day he turned and looked right at her. "Are you just going to sit there watching me everyday?" he asked.
Kalamidi blinked. She couldn't answer since she had no voice.
"Fine, don't answer me then," the Waradore said irritably. "You're distracting me from my training." He turned and punched one of the nearby trees hard enough for the bark to splinter and break.
She tilted her head. There was something about this fellow that peeked her interests... but she was worried that she might cause him harm if she stayed. She was about to leave when he spoke to her again.
"I could use a training partner," he decided as he looked over at her. "You know how to fight don't you?"
Kalamidi's ears fell back and she lowered her gaze to the ground.
"Hit a few trees," the stranger instructed her. "Show me what you've got."
She shook her head thinking, 'what if I hurt him like the people in the village.'
The Waradore crossed his arms and gave her an amused expression. "Do you think you're strong enough to faze me? Listen, because I'm only going to say this once. You can't hurt me, especially the way you are now."
Her ears flicked forward and her eyes widened, startled.
"You aren't that difficult to figure out," the stranger explained, shrugging. "Now do you want to help me train or not? I've wasted enough time talking to you."
She didn't have anything to lose, and she knew she could never return to her village. Accepting the stranger's proposal seemed ok... he did say she couldn't hurt him. She launched out of the thicket and struck the tree he'd just hit. The bark splintered and flew in all directions. Using her speed, she rebounded off one tree and slammed into another, forcing the trunk to bend in an unnatural angle.
"So you do have some fight in you," the Warador noted as he tried to hide his obvious surprise. "Then let's see if you can keep up with me from now on."
"You know..." he said as he stopped to rest for a moment. She turned to him, wagging her tail. "You're kind of irritating..."
Her ears drooped, and she lowered her head sadly. He was probably going to tell her to leave. She didn't want to be on her own again.
"Aren't you tired at all?" he asked with a frown.
She shook her head no.
"Hmph.." he scoffed and crossed his arms over his chest. "I guess I'm going to have to train a lot harder then... which isn't a bad thing."
