Epidemia was the last victim of a terrible epidemic/plague that swept over her village in the forest. She woke with no memories of who she was or where she came from... two watchmen that had been appointed to keep guard over the bodies, banished her from the village where she assumed she used to live. The younger of the two guards gave her the name 'Epidemia.' Later she realizes that the young guard was actually her little brother.
Overtime, her memories slowly begin to return to her. She still doesn't remember her previous name or her childhood... she also doesn't remember what happened to cause the epidemic in her village or if anyone she used to know died in the outbreak.
She kept herself hidden away because she was worried she might still be contagious... but that changed when Katiclis discovered her lurking around his training area. Needless to say, he wasn't thrilled with the company, but he eventually accepted her as one of his followers.
Shortly after she began working for Kataclis, she patched up her wings so she would be able to fly. She also met Drencher, and they became fast friends. She is careful not to touch anyone so the disease she carries won't spread. Since befriending Drencher, she has become a lot more friendly and outspoken.
Meeting Frostbit was an accident... she had been testing her newly repaired wings when she came across his cavern. She treats his advances lightly, and she usually brushes him off when he tries to speak with her. --
Thump thump.
The sound of heart beat...
Thump thump.
Where...? Everything is black.
Thump thump.
It's coming from... inside.
A choking gasp followed by a coughing spasm alerted the nearby watchmen in the trees. They flew down to where she lay in the dirt, but they kept their distance from her. Their eyes narrowed when she tried to stand. Another series of ragged coughs caused her legs to buckle. Blood spilled from her mouth leaving behind a metallic taste on her tongue. What was wrong with her...? She couldn't remember anything... she didn't even know her name.
"Who am...?" she rose to her feet and took an unsteady step forward. "Who... am I...?"
"Stop," one of the winged creatures said, stepping backwards in order to place more distance in between them. He and his partner were both wearing medical masks. Why would they cover their faces like that?
"You have been infected," the other tried to explain.
Infected...? What did that mean? Where was she...? Who were these people...?
"Stop," the first repeated when she took another step towards him and his comrade. "The infected are not permitted to enter the town. You must leave, or we will be forced to kill you."
Kill...? She froze. Why would they kill her?
"But... who am I...?"
"That doesn't matter," the first watchman told her. "You can't go back to the village. You will only end up infecting your friends and family."
"So you know me then...? Tell me my name."
"I told you, the person you were before doesn't exist! She died. You died. Now you're something else. Just look at yourself!"
She brought one of her wings out in front of her. "What is...?" The skin was tearing off... she could see the bone. "What's going on?"
"Your eye too," the second watchman explained, gesturing to his left eye.
She felt the place he was indicating... but there was no eye, just an empty socket. "So... I'm dead?" She asked in astonishment. "How?"
"An epidemic passed through the town," the second watchman explained. "It killed a lot of people before it finally died out... you were the last victim."
"Where am I supposed to go?"
"Somewhere, anywhere, just not here," the first guard insisted.
She wiped away some of the blood dripping from the corner of her mouth. It was this blood that carried the infection... if she wasn't careful, she could start another epidemic... Her damaged wings couldn't carry her, so she turned and began walking away from the scene. Other bodies lay strewn around the forest floor in various stages of decomposition. The smell was horrendous... this part of the forest had become a dumping ground for the victims of the plague.
"Epidemia!" the second watchman called after her. "That's... that's the name we gave you... after..." The first watchman jabbed him hard in the side, silencing him.
She looked over her shoulder at the young guard. For some reason, the boy seemed to look at her differently than the other watchman did... it was almost as though he knew her... "Thank you," she told him with a smile.
At least now she would have a name.
