My miniature dachshund, Cuddles, has been with me since I was seven years old. I can still remember the day we brought her home; her tail wagged perfectly then, and her legs never wobbled. Rarely did she simply walk to her destination—running was much more fun for her. And I happily kept up with her quick pace.
A few years later, I came home from school to find that my hyperactive pup was not there to greet me. The vet was keeping her overnight: she had suffered three slipped discs, leaving her partially paralyzed. The surgery that followed was the first step to recovery; physical therapy was second.
With lots of love and patience, Cuddles regained feeling in her hind legs and could make her way, albeit shakily, down the sidewalk again. It was a triumphant moment, one that I will never forget.
