Mephistos doesn't get much more warning that "Hey, I found this spell that lets me hop dimensions. Let's go!" before he finds himself sitting across from a creepy bookseller trying to explain that he and his mistress are not demons, thank you very much, and if the ginger in the corner does not stop looking as Miss Penel like that he will be forced to do something he will likely not regret.

He doesn't mind, though.

From the time he was a kitten, long before he could shapeshift or even knew Penel's name, he was trained and had it drilled into his mind that he existed to protect and assist his witch. From the time he first met Penelope Hawthorne when she was ten and he was eleven, he knew that he would have his work cut out for him. Despite the younger woman's flighty nature and frequent disregard for common sense, however, he was determined to do his duty and vowed to make her the best witch the world had ever seen if it was the last thing he did.

He never anticipated how horribly he would fail. Or how much he would enjoy it.

Though he started as Penel's aloof, beleaguered feline servant, he has become her closest ally, with her relaxed and easygoing nature rubbing off on him more than his own sharp and organized nature ever rubbed off on her. She's helped him learn how to assume human form and has offered him opportunities and companionship that he never dreamed of. She does not treat him as her cat or her servant, even though he is both. She treats him as her friend, and he will follow her to the ends of this universe and beyond for that.

He loves her dearly, but he worries about her trusting nature.

Even if he feels more and more human every days he walks around wearing his beloved suits and hats, he is a cat deep down. He sleeps more than a human should, dogs and water make him uncomfortable, and he always has the urge to chase small moving objects and laser pointers. He is not human, and he doubts there is a spell in this world or any other that will make him so, and thus he is content to serve his mistress in whatever way he can until the end of his days.
