Jack ran around his back garden, a small yellow plane with a slightly understuffed toy Kumos held in his hand above his head while Jack pretended he was inside the plane and flying around with other pilots in the air force. The boy had a pair of pilot's goggles on his head and the Kumos, who he had named Abderian after his mum had told him it meant 'given to laughter', had a smaller matching pair. Jack laughed happily before collapsing down into a pile of leaves his dad had just finished raking, hugging Abderian to his chest.

He had decided that, when he was older, he wanted to join the Royal Air Force after he had been taken to an air show by his parents and had, since then, spent hours upon hours playing pilot with his toys. Closing his eyes, he went into a daydream where he was a pilot and Abderian was his pet Kumos.

Jack looked to Abderian as the large Kumos ran over, fussing her happily before stepping back to inspect his plane. Deciding it was acceptable and getting the all clear from the mechanics, he got into the plane and looked to Abderian as she jumped into the second seat. He pulled his goggles over his eyes, put on his headset and got ready to take off.

Abderian barked happily, the sound drowned out entirely, as she looked around at the clouds. The pair were in the air and Jack was more relaxed than he had been for days. He loved flying and had done so for years: Abderian at his side the entire time.

They few for a while, man and dog in companionable silence while they both relaxed and let the peace of the sky take over them. Jack was about to land the plane before looking down at the dashboard in front of him where one of the lights was now flashing rapidly to signal an engine was failing. The plane began to slow and Jack fumbled for the ejector seat button, unable to find it. He was going to die. The thought hit him suddenly and the man realised he wasn't ready to die - not yet.

As the plane began to plummet towards the ground, Abderian leant back to where Jack was sat behind her and pressed the button for the seats to eject, the pair being released from the plane where they floated to safety.

Coming out of his daydream, Jack looked around and smiled when he saw the toy dog next to him, picking her up and hugging her to his chest. "We're going to be in the air force one day, Abderian, and you're going to save me if I ever need it. You just wait." He smiled before sitting up suddenly when he heard his mum calling for him to go in and get food. "Just not yet," he whispered to the dog, "I like mum's cooking too much."
