Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
~Berthold Auerbach

Who would have thought I'd fall for her ?

The day started out like any other one. As usual, I got up from my thin mattress on the alley floor and drudged over to the rain barrel to wash off. Luckily it had rained a few days ago; there was water for us. Unfortunately, this rain also meant we'd been and would be sleeping in the damp for a while.

"Ready for another day's work Arpeggio?" rumbled Fever (we all had nicknames here; what his real name is, I do not know). "No money means this," he raises his fist,"meets your pretty face." Fever grins evilly at me before swaggering off to terrorize some other poor soul in our camp.

"Com'on Arpeggio," Siren purred, "the day's a wasting!" Blowing me a blood red kiss, she flounced out with her teeny skirt and way too revealing top amidst the drooling males. I shuddered in disgust; Siren has the uncanny ability to make more money in a day than the rest of us do in a week.

Shaking the remaining beads of water from my hair, I too leave to start yet another day out in the unbearably hot sun in hopes for a few pieces of gold. I settle myself in the usual corner with my wooden bowl. The chaos of my surroundings was near unbearable but I smiled; I had my own way out. Closing my eyes, I let the familiar serene energy cut me out of the hustle and bustle of market life. For this one moment, I am my own person; no one can bother me.

Taking a deep breath, I persuade the gentle power out of my being. The energy (through some method unknown to me) changes to another form; music. With my mind, I weave the sound into flowing compositions; some are by request, others from my own imagination. Around me, music notes swirl and dance, making up the accompaniment of my one man concerto.

People gather around; they always do. Some ask for personal favourites, others just stand and watch. Either way, my bowl began to fill with gold.

Eventually, the mid morning rush calms and I can relax and wait for the afternoon. I toss a glance at my bowl. Not bad for a half a day's work!

"Cough it up Runt," Fever growls grabbing me by my collar. I shoot him a dirty look. If he didn't provide the only half decent shelter in the area for people like me, I'd give him a piece of my mind. But that thought completely leaves my mind when he gives me a rough shake and reminds me once again why that would be a bad idea.

"Hey! Leave him alone!" Fever and I both swivel towards the voice. That was when I first saw her. Standing a few feet from us was a young lady with hair so gold it was almost white. Though she was dressed in merchant's clothing, it was obvious in her poise that she was not of low class.

"Put him down!" She demanded. I had to admire her courage; Fever was at least three times her size and could snap a normal sized person like a twig.

"As you wish my lady," Fever smirked. He dropped into a mocking bow before sauntering off with my hard earned gold, leaving me sprawled on the ground.

"What a Jerk!" the girl exclaimed. I found myself looking into her eyes as she helped me to my feet.

"I-is not w-worth it," I stuttered, partly from embarrassment and partly because her gold eyes kept me from putting together a decent sentence. She seemed unconvinced so I looked down at me feet to collect my scattered thoughts. "Really, it's no big deal, he does it every day."

She looked positively furious "well..." she faltered as if she thought better. Instead, she pulled from her neck an exquisite topaz and diamond necklace and put it into my hands along with a purse filled with gold. "I hope this will pay for everything he's taken."

"Miss, I can't take this!"

"Of course you can, I insist," she smiled up at me, her sparkling eyes knocked the breath out of me. "Just promise me that you won't give them to that idiot".

"I won't Miss" I blushed, "I thank you very much Miss."

"Oh, and one more thing," the young lady drew out an envelope from within her robes. "Come to this address tonight, I want you to showcase your musical talent there. What is your name?"

"Arpeggio"

"No, your REAL name," her breathtaking smile widened.

"Luciano, and I will. Come that is," I blurted, then mentally kicked myself revealing my real name; Fever would have my head if he found out. Obviously delighted, she winked at me and turned to leave. I fingered the wax seal on the envelope for a moment. "Wait! Could I ask of your name?"

She paused. "Tori. My name is Tori." With that, she disappeared.

After standing there like an idiot for what felt like an hour, I opened the envelope with shaking hands. Inside was an lavishly scribed invitation:
