Willkommen in Deutschland!

I vas born in zee tall grasses of zee mountain trail ver zee music of zee stream soothed my ears as Mama licked me clean. Humans came for her in zee next hour but she vispered vords in my ear I vil never forget.

You are a vild spirit, my son. You vil drink zee sweet air zat tastes of clear mountain water und zee little green plants zat tickle your hoofs. Zee humans vil break you to bridle, but do not surrender your spirit. Stay vild at heart, dear one.

Zee humans zat took me avay from Mama learned zat hoofs on a young horse are strong and fast. One man got in my vay. I did not mean to hurt him. He vos a fool and got a fool's revard, as Mama once said about a colt zat tried to lick honey from a fallen bee nest. Zee humans feared me. Zey locked me in a little box und called me a bad horse. I hung my head in shame. I am vild, but I do not try to be bad.

Hans did not use a vip to drive me from zee door. He came vith gift of carrots and a sveet apple zat tasted of sunshine. He petted my mane and looked into my eyes, saying I vos not bad, only different.

He stood and talked vile I ate. He vos different too. In his village, boys threw rocks and called him bad names because he did not know his Papa and he vos very tall und skinny, like a scarecrow zat grew legs to jump down from zee pole. In school, he got bad grades. Zee teachers said he dreamed too much und zat he vould never learn zee lessons he needed for even zee most basic jobs. He could not learn like ozer boys. Vords danced on zee pages of zee books.

Zen one year a new teacher came to school. She did not believe he vas slow. He vos just different. She taught him a vay to make zee letters sit still.

I did not understand much of vot he vas saying but his hand vos gentle and zee carrots were tender and crunchy, just zee vay I like. I did not try to crush him against zee stall side or step on his foot. I let him come every day, as long as he had treats. I even let him slip zee bridle over my head.

He began to call me Otto. Zis is not my name but I accepted it as a badge of human limits. My true name is a beautiful mingling of sounds zat only a horse could pronounce vith any accuracy.

It took time to train Hans right. Sometimes he vould try to jump me ven I did not feel like jumping so I vould send him flying over zee bar to see how he liked such an unsettling feeling. He vould land in thick mud and it vould drip from his hair. How I vould laugh! Ven zee mud vas dry enough zat it would not matt my fur, I vould allow his approach. If zee treats in his pocket ver good enough, I might even let zee muddy man climb onto me sooner.

I vos not afraid at our first show. Some horses vil shy or rear ven zey see zee colored flags and zee people to zee side vith zer little children and dogs. I trotted by and gave zem no more zan a twitch of my tail. Zey ver not vorth my notice.

I flew over zee jumps vith Hans calling out praise. Ven he took the ribbon, he kissed my nose and called me his beauty. He vos so excited over a little strip of cloth zat he gave me a mix of apples and oats. I decided I vould help him win more of zee silly ribbons for such a price.

I am master of zee trot, zee canter, and zee high-jump. I can walk in a formation to zee national music zat plays as we march in proud columns. I have even served as zee valiant steed ven Hans played zee part of knight at a place he calls zee Rennaissance Fair. Zer is not a challenge zat bows my head. Like zee mighty Clydsdale my cousin, I am tireless.

I vant it understood zat I am no man's servant, not even for Hans. Ven I do not feel like valking, I stand. Ven the ground feels wrong beneath my hoofs, I vil not be urged into a trot even as lesser horses begin to slip and slide. Hans knows zat I am smart and strong and zat my vay is alvays zee best vay. He gives me my head ven I demand it, for my Hans has learned zat I am zee spirit zat vil never be tamed.
