I was beautiful once. My body was covered in soft fur while my wings were feathered with intricate patterns. I gloried in my good looks, spending hours preening my feathers.
I loved to fly, there is something so freeing about being up in the air with nothing to hold you there except your own strength. Every time I flew past a reflective surface I would watch myself and felt proud seeing the lithe muscular expanse of my beating wings. It was glorious.
One day as I was flying low over the ocean a curiously ugly creature appeared in the water below me. It flowed through the water the same way I flew through the air, swift and sure. I had never seen it's like before. I slowed to a hover as I watched it. It was small, brown, had black horns with a skull mask over its face. Suddenly it leapt at me, grabbing hold of my tail. The creature was far heavier than I thought possible. I spun in the air trying to dislodge it but it would not budge. My tail was now soaked through by the water streaming off the creatures's slick body. Overburdened by the weight of the creature and without the necessary steering from my tail feathers I lost control. I beat my wings furiously, desparate to regain my balance. The effort proved futile as a second, much larger creature broke through the water and latched onto my right hind foot. It was too much. We crashed into the water with a great splash and I was tugged down beneath the surface of the waves.
I woke on a sandy beach. Rubbing sand out of my eyes with one paw I looked around to see I was on a small island. Tropical plants grew futher up the beach and to my left a stream trickled into the ocean. Cautiously I got to my feet and started to stretch my wings to prepare for flight.
Something felt wrong.
Craning my head around to peer at my wings I was astonished to find them missing. Blinking in surprise I studied my body trying to determine what had happened. Wondering if there was still sand in my eyes I rubbed them again and noticed my paw was as furless as a newborn. My lovely silver fur had disappeared, my paw was now covered by thick muddy brown skin with pale blue spots. Numbly I walked to the stream and peered over the edge trying to catch a glimpse of my reflection.
I was hideous.
In addition to the thick skin there were scales covering my face. My wings had been replaced by strange protuberances that looked vaguely like fern fronds as they rippled in the breeze. Each frond was tipped with a bright purple ball of flesh. My brown skin had pale blue patterns all over it that shifted and changed by themselves, the effect made me nauseous. I sat down in shock. At that moment the small creature swam up the river to come ashore right in front of me.
"Mistresss wantsss to sssee you." it hissed at me. When I didn't respond it brought out a small midnight blue pearl, silver lightning danced across it's surface. "You will come sssee Missstresss if you will it or not." It held the pearl out in my direction and gestured with its hand. A jolt of lightning shot from the orb to my body, I stiffened as my body started to move of it's own accord. I was forced to walk to the edge of the ocean and then into the waves, the deeper I got the better my strange body felt. I was suprised by this, it felt almost as good as gliding through the air.
As we got beyond the breakers a dark shape beneath the waves moved towards us, if I wasn't being forced I would have been petrified by fear. When it reached us it rose up out of the water to revel a beautiful yet cruel human face. Her hair was blue black and flowed independently of the ocean swell around us. Horns protruded from the top of her head, the same pasty green tinged grey as her skin. Her red lips parted as she began to speak.
"I am Merana and you will do well to remember it ssslave, you are now mine to do with asss I will. Your pride and arroganccce in your appearanccce remindsss me of a onccce beautiful woman. You have been punissshed asss I have ssslave. Now your life belongsss to me." The sea witch smiled coldly at me and slipped back into the water. Powerless, I followed.
