Charon is one of the first things the deceased see. This androgynous, skeletal figure of unknown origin has been ferrying new souls across the river Styx, through the gates of hell (past the dreaded Cerberus), and onto the shore beyond, for thousands of years...
...if they have what xe needs. Only those buried with a silver coin known as an obolus are permitted to board Charon`s boat. The rest must stay on the small, barren strip of cold, black sand for eternity.
Panicked, the coin-deprived souls wade after the leaving boat, pleading for mercy, and are frozen so through that they are unable to escape the river. So many have done this that passage over Styx has become dangerous, and any leaning too far over the side of Charon`s boat risk being seized and dragged in by those trapped in its waters.
Charon has no sympathy for those that are seized. The river is xir own domain, given to xir by Hades. All that exists within it is xirs to keep, and do with what xe will.
