Profile

  • Name: George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou)
  • Lived: 25 June 1963 – 25 December 2016

I think there’s something you should know

For as long as I can remember George Michael’s music has been a part of my life. I was born in 1984 and that was the same year as Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go was released, and since my mom likes the song it was played pretty regularly throughout my childhood and beyond. And I’ve always loved 80’s music so his early songs with Wham! as well as his early solo stuff has always had a sound that I like.
And during the mid 90’s to the early 00’s I often watched MTV after school and recorded music videos onto vhs tapes. I remember seeing the videos for Too Funky and Fastlove on there and enjoying both thoroughly.

I think it’s time I told you so

So, when I learned about his death on the morning of the 26th of December 2016 it was a shock. To learn that someone that had become such a staple for my entire life was gone was difficult to take in. I’ll be honest and say that it didn’t affect me as fundamentally as when Robin Williams, Avicii or John “Totalbiscuit” Bain died, but it did affect me. Just in a different way. It was like something was now missing in my life. Like a part of my foundation had been chipped away.

There’s something deep inside of me

When it comes to his time in Wham! I honestly haven’t listened to a lot of their songs but there’s still a couple that stand out to me. I like Everything She Wants with it’s pretty typical 80’s pop sound. The sound that I’ve loved throughout my life. The same goes for I’m Your Man.

There’s someone else I’ve got to be

I also really love Young Guns, which is easily top three of my favorite Wham! songs. Some of my attachment to that song probably has to do with the circumstances around the first time I heard it but either way I like it a lot and it’s one of those songs where I know the lyrics by heart and sing along to whenever I hear it. But my two absolute favorite songs in their repertoire are by far Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Last Christmas. The latter is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs (and both my mom and my sister agree with me on that), and the first one just has this infectious happy sound that I just can’t resist. Every time that I hear it I have to sing along.

Take back your picture in a frame

As for the music he made after going solo I still very much love his late 80’s and early 90’s songs the best. I never get tired of listening to his duets I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) with Aretha Franklin and Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me with Elton John.
Of course, I also like the solo songs like One More Try and Careless Whisper. That last one is definitely top 3 for me for this era of his music. My two favorite songs are by far Freedom and Faith though. When it comes to all of these what I said about the duets apply to every single song. I never get tired of listening to them and belting along at the top of my lungs when I’m on my own.

Take back your singing in the rain

Now when it comes to his later music (late 90’s and onward) I do have some favorites there too. Like I mentioned in the beginning I liked Too Funky and Fastlove right away after seeing the music videos. I’m sure that if I had heard the songs before seeing the videos I would still love them just as much. And in the same vein as those two songs you have Outside. All three of these songs are somewhat similar to me in the sense that they have a similar theme (revolving around sex and not being ashamed of it).
Quite different from those three are songs like I Can’t Make You Love Me and his duet with Mary J. Blige, As. These two are beautiful songs that bring out the feels in me big time.
At the top of my list of modern George Michael songs is definitely An Easier Affair though. I love the lyrics a lot because of how they tell people to just be themselves and not be ashamed of who they are. It doesn’t matter who you love or what other people think about you. What matters is that you’re true to who you are. And the earlier in your life that you accept that, the happier you will be.

I just hope you understand

George Michael has always had a sound that spoke to me. Whether it was his very 80’s sounding sound in the first half of his career, or the more funky and almost blues-like sound of the second half doesn’t matter. His music hit a chord in me from the start.

You were an icon in your own way, and you even helped shape the music industry during your career. You will always have a place in my heart, George Michael. And I hope that you get to spend all of your time together with Anselmo, Abby and Meggy now.
