Life Excerpt

There was an explosion from the inn.

It was Luna; there could be no doubt. Keegan and Chrysander ran back to the main street, and thick, green smoke poured from the windows of her room. People stood in the street, coughing and choking on the smoke, green puffs bursting into their hands. A few were praying, many were cursing, most were staring up at the window, and all of them were muttering about damned magicians.

-"Where's Luna?

Chrysander sighed. -"Probably in her room. I doubt they've had time to kick her out, sir."

Keegan knew he was right. They'd have to go stay in the woods for the night in a camp, despite being in a town with an inn and relatively comfortable beds with mattress cords that pulled tight enough to keep him from sinking into the straw. He knew Luna needed to practice, but she could at least find a place that wouldn't get them all kicked out of the only inn for weeks in any direction.

-"Get her?" Keegan said. -"I want to throttle her."

But before Chrysander could give him a short lecture about treating the girl with respect and recognizing the amount of skill and concentration that goes into making the kind of errors that don't result in violent, magical death, Luna stumbled out of the inn, wisely carrying her knapsack and staff with her. She, too, was coughing up small clouds of green haze, but unlike the other patrons who had tumbled out the door before her, she was literally covered head-to-foot in purple ash.

If Keegan felt like being fair, he'd admit that, besides this explosion, she had only cast that one other spell backwards. They'd been journeying for less than a month, but of the spells she'd done thus far, making mistakes of only two put her success rate extremely high. For a student, that impressed him in a frustrated place that didn't want to be impressed. Eventually, she'd be the best kind of magical companion. Though she wasn't an angelic vision of Marian purity and value, she certainly fit the descriptions of Saint Jeanne. With a warrior's spirit, her beauty seemed all the more striking, and Keegan had yet to see her in action.

Although he wanted to be furious, he couldn't even be cross with her. She looked furious with herself, like a violet Valkyrie. The innkeeper and his wife had found her and begun to shout, but Luna immediately looked contrite and ashamed. Then, it looked like she was explaining the reasons why she and her companions should not be asked to leave. After a few minutes, the innkeeper and his wife began to soften, and suddenly, the wife pulled Luna into her arms in a tight hug.

Keegan clapped Chrysander on the back, striding toward the inn. -"Well, friend, it looks like we won't have to spend the night in camp after all."
