the creation

When it came to creating masterpieces, not only was he blessed with the skill of a steady hand - or paw, in his situation - but Canvas also had the ability to bring his artwork to life. Not in the general "Oh my goodness I feel like I'm really there!" sense, either. Rather, by using a small portion of his spiritual energy, he was able to breathe life into his paintings for a brief period of time, allowing them to experience our world as their own.

Canvas had a gift.

As an artist, Canvas couldn't have asked for a more appropriate gift. For what artist in the world wouldn't wish to see their artwork become reality?

Unfortunately, this gift came with a particularly serious problem. While a normal present may come wrapped in a box, Canvas gift arrived with no such flair. There was no box to speak of, no instructions to pour through, and no manufacturer's warranty. It just was.

It was due to this problem that Canvas was in such a bind.

One winter night, while painting a new bauble to hang on his Christmas tree, Canvas was suddenly stricken with inspiration. Why not paint the inside of the bauble? Then, when the lights on the tree shone through the frosted blue glass of the ornament, the colors were sure to glisten most beautifully.

Curious of his new idea, Canvas worked excitedly on his new project. Furiously moving his thinly-tipped brush over the delicate inner surface of the glass bauble, the young Jollin saw the image of a beautiful fairy beginning to form.

Adding a few charming details here and there, he finished his new masterpiece with a flick of his wrist and a dash of pink to the fey creature's flawless cheeks. After studying his work and giving an appreciative nod, Canvas sealed the bauble with a smooth metal cap.

It was here where his issues began.

Upon using his powers to bring his creation to life, Canvas immediately discovered a flaw in his plan. Since the painting was on the inside of the bauble, the newly formed fairy was now trapped within the glass wall. Canvas' first thought was to release the fairy. However, after inspecting the metal ornament cap, he realized that the being, though tiny, would never fit through the opening.

Watching as the small creature (who was very much a young lady) pressed her face against the glass, the Jollin offered her a sheepish smile and an apology.

"I'm sorry, little fairy. I'm afraid you're stuck in this bauble until my magic wears off. Don't worry, though. I'll make sure you see as much of the world as you can before you return to the ornament's walls."

With that promise, Canvas gathered a length of ribbon from his materials box and, after threading it through the top of the ornament cap and tying it into a neat bow, wrapped the ribbon around his tail. The glass ornament bobbed merrily as Canvas raised his furry tail to have a look at the fairy within.

"How is this?" He asked, pressing his nose to the glass. "This way, I can take you with me wherever I go."

While his art would normally only live for a few days at a time (3-4 days, to be precise), his newest companion continued to move and interact well into the second week after her creation.

Perplexed, Canvas started to experiment.

He spent days painting similar images of fairies, pixies, and other mythical beasts onto all sorts of ornaments and trinkets. Finally, after much frustration and failure, the young Jollin discovered the reason behind his fairy's unusual lifespan.

As it turned out, when he trapped the creature within the ornament, he also trapped his magic within the object as well. This is what kept the fairy alive when all of his other creations had long returned to their inanimate state. It also meant that if he were to somehow release the fairy from her prison, the magic would slowly be lost, and she would return to being nothing more than an ordinary work of art.

Wishing to preserve his companion for as long as possible, Canvas took certain measures to keep her safe. While he carted her around at the end of his fluffy tail, Canvas would make sure to hold her high above the ground, so as not to break the ornament on any low-lying rocks or other such hazards. When she wasn't attached to his tail, the Jollin would lay the little fairy's glass home on a gorgeous silk pillow he had sewn together himself.

It wasn't long before the tiny being started to repay him for his kindness. As he worked, Canvas could hear her whispers through the glass, her voice like the sound of sweetly tinkling bells. Her words offered him inspiration, and with her guidance, his works blossomed.

As he added detail to his latest work of art, Canvas smiled softly. Glancing toward the glass ornament lying delicately on the pillow nearby, he watched as the tiny fairy within rested against the smooth walls of the bauble. Sighing, the Jollin placed his unfinished piece carefully on his work bench. After putting away his supplies, he scooped up the glass bauble and headed toward his bedroom for some well deserved rest.

During the past weeks, he had quickly discovered the truth that when your muse has called it a night, it's best to follow suit. Besides, there was always tomorrow.
