“Look here, Cosette,” Tramp said gruffly, “I need you to be square with me right now. Was your husband involved with... dreams at all?”
“Oh no, he would never,” replied Cosette. “He always said it was a horrible habit and all the dream dens needed to be shut down.”
“Because if it’s the bakery I think it is, he might not have thought it was such a dirty habit after all,” continued Tramp, as he strode down the street. The bakery in question was only a few blocks away.
“Which bakery is that?” asked Cosette. “Carole’s? He did go there quite a bit, but only because he knew I’m quite fond of her pastries, he would always bring me home some when he would work late into the night-”
“And how often was that? How late at night?” Tramp interjected.
“Oh, I’m not sure, really. Maybe two or three times a week he would work until after midnight. I often fell asleep waiting for him so I rarely saw him coming home. Although...,” she trailed off. Tramp felt a bit guilty interrogating her in such a public place, but he needed the answers before they got to Carole’s.
“Although what, Cosette?”
“Well, there was one night, a few weeks back, where I was awake when he arrived home for once... he looked a little, oh, I’m not sure, a little odd. His eyes weren’t quite as focused as they usually are. He didn’t look all there,” she finished thoughtfully.
Tramp groaned to himself. Sure sounded like someone with a habit, although Cosette would never admit it. Although... he glanced over at her. She seemed to be thinking hard, he wondered if she was putting two and two together. They walked on in silence until they reached the bakery.
Bells jingled overhead as they entered the shop. A pink ontra stood behind the counter, which was a giant display case full of tasty looking baked goods. Cosette let out a little squeal of delight and hurried over to examine them, but Tramp had other business to attend to.
“Open a little late tonight, are we, Carole?” He asked the ontra.
“Oh, well, you know,” she replied, a glint in her eye. “You never know when someone is going to need some baked goods, it’s a niche market but it works.”
Tramp sighed and said gruffly, “Look, Carole, drop the shenanigans. We both know what happens here, it’s not like I didn’t pick my partner up here many, many nights.”
“I need information. One of your regulars turned up dead and I need to know who did it.”
He heard a gasp and a bottle shatter, and looked up. A small kora was staring at him, looking shocked. In a trembling voice, it asked, “Not Lou, please tell me it wasn’t Lou...”
That piqued his interest. “And why would you ask about Lou?”
She replied, “Well, he missed his appointment last night, and he’s usually so prompt I was worried about him-”
“That’s enough, Lidia,” interjected Carole. “They might know what we do here but we don’t need to give away all of our business information in one night. Go back to your work,” the kora nodded and scurried into the back of the shop. “Look, Tramp, he was a regular here. Three times a week, nine o’clock sharp. We saw him for his last appointment, he left when he was coming down, that was it.”
Cosette was staring at Carole, looking confused. She asked, “Please, what’s happening? Why are you all talking about my husband like this? He only came here for the pastries...”
“Yeah, sure he did, doll,” replied Carole. “Look, sweetie, someone’s gotta break this to you and Tramp is too much of a bleeding heart to do it. Your husband was a dream addict.”
Cosette gasped and let out a tiny “No!”
“He was,” Carole continued, “he didn’t want you to know. It wasn’t my business. But he did love you more than anything, I promise you that. It was nothing to do with you.”
Cosette crumpled to the ground, sniffling. Tramp hated that she’d had to find out this way, and he moved over to pat her on the shoulder.
“The way you were talking, I’d begun to suspect something was going on...” she said, her voice trembling. “But I’d hoped... I don’t know. What is this place?”
“Couldn’t have broken it to her gently, could you,” he looked at Carole. She shrugged.
“Look, Lidia was his attendant. She’s probably my best girl, I’d trust her with my own dreams. Go talk to her in the back if you want to, just leave me alone after that. We had nothing to do with this.”
