I remember it had been a cold and chilly evening sometime in late autumn. The temple, my home, for the first time in history had grown dark. A forlorn silence had fallen upon me. I watched, unmoving, as the smoke from the dying embers floated away on the frigid breeze. They will return. I shivered, closing my eyes tightly as if to guard against the approaching winter. I could hear the soft skittering of the leaves below, brown, curled, and forgotten along the overgrown pathway.

The temple had passed from generation to generation under my watchful gaze. I had seen the young arrive, grow old, and eventually pass on; leaving their memory behind for me to protect. The lineage here was strong, loyal, and courageous. Soldiers had come from this house, warriors, scribes, possible emperors in the making. They whispered their secrets to me knowing that I would always be there to guide and protect them on their journey through life. I was proud - had been proud - to love and be loved in such a way.

They will return. Everything was different now and I hadn't even recognized the change at first. How long had it been? Weeks? Months? Years? For a being that never ages time has no meaning. The trees can tell a different story, however, and I am forced into the realization that it must have been a very long time.

"They will return," I whispered to the darkness with as much certainty as I could muster. The other guardians had long since moved on, leaving me alone with my stout determination. "The family is gone, died out, or moved away" they'd said, but I refused to believe it. And in my stubbornness I found only loneliness.

One day, I knew they would return. They would find me sitting in the same spot that they left me. Ever-watching and ever-waiting. Guarding a legacy of memories, of hopes, of wishes, of dreams for the future. A loyal and protecting friend, refusing to be forgotten until time eventually claims all at the very, very, end.
