Inkie Pie the Angel

Inkie Pie had not always been known by that name. Her given name at birth had been Chanel, for her parents had a flair for the dramatic. All her brothers and sisters had equally lovely names, for their parents also wanted something beautiful for each of their children to carry through life. However, Inkie Pie had come by her nickname without much surprise to her family. All her life, and now extending into her afterlife as well, she loved desserts. Especially pies. Any kind of pies. She was slightly pickier with cakes and cookies and cobblers and tarts, but not by much.

When she was a cub, her absolute favorite pie was blueberry. Every time she ate one she did it with such gusto that the juice stained her fur and she looked like she was covered with ink. Her mother would laugh and call her Inkie Pie, and it stuck. But she cherished it because it had no bad connotation. It had been said with humor and love, and even though she learned to devour her desserts much more neatly and without getting it all over her, the memories gleamed like diamonds from her past and she treasured them.

Today Inkie Pie is an angel, and her job is to escort deserving souls to Heaven. However, she had taken it upon herself many decades ago to help those less deserving to become more so by helping to change their lives and outlook before it was too late. She had been quite successful so she had been encouraged to continue. The time spent in the corporeal world also gave her the opportunity to indulge in her favorite pastime of eating pies and other desserts, which her supervisor overlooked with a knowing grin. As a vice it was a very minor one.

One of her projects had become her minion over time. Glacier was a Petit. She had the form of a beautiful longhaired fluffy white cat with emerald green eyes. She was no longer an evil spirit, though she sometimes still had questionable motives, and was often grouchy. She was still a wonderful companion in spite of this and helped Inkie Pie keep her books straight and her projects running smoothly.

Glacier grumpily glanced up from her desk as Inkie Pie came into the office. "It's about time! You have spent far too long on that Darkonite. Some souls you can't help, you know. And he's far too stubborn and set in his evil ways. Just quit on him already! You have thirty-four lined up that really do have a chance and if you don't act quickly, this one for sure will be lost!" Glacier grabbed a file with a picture on the cover from the stack in front of her and waved it in Inkie Pie's general direction. Her tail lashed with her irritation.

Inkie Pie grinned. She placed the file she was carrying into the empty slot marked Celebration and danced a little jig while Glacier's beautiful eyes widened.

"You did it!" the cat whispered. She absolutely hated being wrong, but in this case it was a marvelous thing.

Inkie Pie presented a small can with a purple bow on it to Glacier with a flourish, and then unable to contain her delight, did an aerial somersault with her wings providing lift. Laughing, she gracefully landed on all fours then continued the motion until she was in a headstand. Glacier had to laugh too, and then looked with great interest at her gift. She flung the bow and opened the can and the most alluring aroma of tuna surrounded her. As Glacier ate her treat with abandon, Inkie Pie smiled. Life was good, but the afterlife was even better.
