A small creature padded into the house through the front door and looked around happily, his beaver-like tail wagging back and forth in excitement. He had a new home. No longer was he trapped as an experiment: a mix of different species created for the amusement of two warped scientists. He looked up at his new owner before trotting around the house to get used to all the space. So much space. He definitely preferred it to his cage.

The creature wasn't very smart because he wasn't created to be smart. He understood some human words and knew how to carry out basic commands like "sit" and "fetch" but that was it. His owner had named him "Barry" - he knew that too. He needed to respond to "Barry" not "Experiment" now. That much he could do.

Barry was an odd creature: he looked more like a beaver than anything else, he wagged his tail like a dog, he purred like a cat and his owner could swear she'd seen his teal and pink fur glow in the dark on more than one occasion.

Spending most of his time laid by his owners feet, on his stomach with his short, stubby legs splayed out on either side of him, Barry had decided he had a perfect life. Though he wasn't even sure how you would define a perfect life, it was better to how he used to live. That was good enough for him.

Content. That would be the best way to describe him. Definitely content. He purred a lot and his tail wagged near enough constantly. Barry was often taken out on walks to the park where he played with other pets, oblivious to the humans staring at his unusual appearance. He would often end up leaving trails of muddy paw prints on the wooden floor in the hallway when they got home afterwards, leaving his owner with the job of carrying him up to the bathroom and washing him. The creature didn't care, or he didn't understand more likely, and he just liked the attention he got when he was being scrubbed clean.

One day, it all went wrong though. The creature's perfect life was cut short by a misunderstanding (he had a lot of those because of his inability to just stop and think). Barry ran onto the road, oblivious to the oncoming traffic. "Stop, Barry!" he heard his owner shout, not realising the consequences of her words until it was too late. So he stopped where he was: straight in front of the car. And that was when he was hit.

He was compliant; it was all he knew.
