A love eternal across a sea of stars

The tales of the heavens number many: legendary quests, feats of strength, phenomena aplenty. Yet, amid these grand tales, a love story strikes a chord in the hearts of the people. Their romance serves as the basis of Chinese Valentine's Day, an occasion called the Qixi Festival.

Their names have long been lost to history, their beings denoted in their roles. The Weaver Girl--Zhinu, in the Chinese language--was the youngest of seven heavenly sisters, an immortal beauty whose intricate handicraft wove colors into sky. The Cowherd--Niulang--was an ordinary mortal, a commoner with no title or riches to his name. The names of Vega and Altair followed later, names that the stars themselves bowed grudgingly to.

This here? This is the simple tale of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl: the romance of two bright, distant stars.

-

Zhinu, accompanied by her sisters, slipped out of the heavenly Jade Palace late one night to explore mortal world. Near a tranquil lake, they shed their celestial garments to bathe.

Yet after much merriment in the lake, their clothes were nowhere to be seen--seemingly vanished into thin air. While her sisters pondered their predicament, Zhinu set out to search nearby for their garb. She stumbled upon a cowherd tending his oxen in a neighboring meadow: one who'd mischievously taken the clothes from the lakeside, claiming his beloved ox had urged him to.

It was love at first sight.

Charmed by his trickery--and perhaps equally flustered that he'd seen her in the nude, she agreed to his brazen request for her hand in marriage. Returning the clothes to her sisters, she pled with them to let her stay on Earth, to live humbly with her newfound love.

Though reluctant, her sisters agreed, returning to the heavens with one fewer among them.

For three years, Niulang and Zhinu lived happily together as husband and wife, welcoming two children to their family. They lived a quiet life, tending to his herd in the countryside--out of sight, out of mind.

Yet the Heavenly Empress eventually noted the faded hues of the skyscape, summoning her seven daughters before her: only to find six present. She questioned the girls, demanded to know the truth: where was the seventh?

The sisters tried to outwit their mother, yet found themselves outmatched. From them, the Empress discovered the truth of Zhinu's secret life on Earth, growing livid that she had taken a mortal man to wed.

The Queen Mother of the West plucked her daughter from the lands of China, bringing her back into the heaven-bound Jade Palace at once; she demanded that Zhinu return to her celestial duty once more, to weave her colors into the fabric of the heavens.

On Earth, Niulang returns home from a day tending his livestock, only to find that his wife has disappeared without a trace. Distraught, he wept before his herd; his most beloved ox--the very same who'd suggested stealing the celestial maidens' robes--approached to share what had conspired: his wife had been summoned back to the heavens. The same beast, a great and mighty bull, told Niulang that he could follow in pursuit by using the bull's own hide.

With a heavy heart, Niulang slew the bull, fashioning its hide into a boat--one that could sail into the heavens. He bundled his two children into the vessel and set off into the beyond to search for his wife.

The great Empress found his journey foolhardy and insolent; in her rage, she plucked a long, silver pin from her hair, its jewels glittering in her hand. With a deft slash, she split the heavens open; stars poured forth from the torn sky, coalescing into a nebulous galaxy--a river too precarious to ford, even for heavenly beings.

The lovers, separated, live at the banks of the celestial river. Zhinu weeps as she weaves delicate patterns on her loom, spinning her colors into the fabric of skybound clouds. Niulang looks on, a sea of stars away; he keeps a brave face before their growing children, leaving his laments in the confidence of isolation. The lovers' tears mix with the stars, sparkling amongst the abounding cosmos. As they weep, the stars flicker and flash; the elders say that, if you look closely enough, the two stars twinkle back at each other.

Yet Zhinu's father, the Jade Emperor of the Heavens, took pity on these lovers; though he dares not act directly against his Empress, he arranged a chance for the couple to be together on their anniversary--the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On that day, every earthen flock of magpies assembles across the silvered River of Stars, forming a fluttering bridge between the family.

At once, the lovers cross over, reunited in the tender embrace of each others' arms once more--if only for a fleeting day.
