It’s early morning when Damius steps out onto his front step, the sun barely up over the horizon when he’s watering the flowerbed that lines beneath his kitchen and livingroom windows. He’s leaning down, carefully inspecting the blooms for any insects and the buds to ensure that the plant was thriving. The range of colours spreads from one end to the other, a hanging basket from the overhang holding a small crawling plant that he pulls down to water last before returning inside.

The neighborhood doesn’t see him again until closer to noon when Damius is pulling on an apron and stepping inside a local bakery. The smells of sweet cakes and fresh bread flows from the doors when opened, and if anyone speaks to him during work he’s pleasant, quiet, and gentle. He sneaks a few kids a free cookie, ones he pays for himself, and tosses whatever change he has into the tip cup for the other workers on his way out, waving to them as he pulls off his apron and dusts the flour off onto his pants.

Stretching his arms above his head, Damius returns home near seven that night, closing the door and locking it behind him, flicking on lights as he passes through rooms and makes himself something to eat. There’s some leftover ham in the fridge along with half a head of lettuce -- a salad would work. There’s carrots and cucumbers that get chopped up, a precise movement he seems to have perfected over years of food prep work. It’s eaten and cleaned up by eight thirty and Damius finds himself pushing up his sleeves and heading into the basement.

‘ Alright, lets try this again. ‘

The doors are pushed open to metal tables with beakers and machines giving off soft beeps. There are papers scattered across a desk in the far corner, and a large enough tube with what is clearly a human body floating in it. What greets him though is a small array of creatures -- skeletal in frame and making -- and Damius bends down to touch each of them, soft words as he walks past after and focuses on a bundle of paperwork near the entrance.

He has projects he’s working on, different stages of death to reverse, or bones to cure. He has a hospital visit in a few days that he was promised unsupervised time in with a patient to try and reverse bone disease, and another in a couple weeks with someones mother who was rapidly declining in health. Thinking about them though .. hurts. These living humans are passing away when their souls weren’t prepared to leave, and more often than not they all return if he gets to them soon enough but -- his own sister was so resilient against returning.

The bundle of papers are put down and approaching the tube in the corner, a hand is placed against it, expression soft yet his eyes kept a determined edge to them. Why was she so against returning ?? She had told him just days before that he was never leaving her sight, that she was going to watch over him until he was ready to be without her. He wasn’t ready though, yet she refused to come back and fulfil her promise. It’s a quick shake of his head though, turning back to the crew of creatures that had all sat in their usual spots, Damius smiling about the familiarity of the scene, about how this felt like home, this felt normal after years of perfecting his work and practice.

It’s not long after that he’s pushing tables and chairs out of the way, careful of anything breakable on the surfaces before he leaves himself enough space on the floor to work. This would do. A stick of chalk is pulled from a small box and he begins drawing, the circle and symbols foreign to everyone but someone who knew the practice. He had another project he was working on, but before he could try to put the body and soul back together he had to retrieve the soul, bind it to something in this realm before he got the body in here as that was always a harder part, sketchy to anyone who seen it happen after all. Or at least he could take the soul with him, usually they went nicely if he asked politely.

This one was particularly stubborn, it would flicker in and out of existence, send his power into overloads or outright shut it off ( Damius stopped these days, there was too much other important business occuring in the basement to have it shut down for too long ). He had to keep trying though, because if he could get this stubborn soul to return and enter their body then he could eventually do his sister as well, and then -- then he’d be happy again.

Well, sleeves rolled up, it was time for necromancy.
