"Please, let me help you."
Those were the very first words she had ever spoken to him, having appeared to him as an angel descended from heaven. Emmett Dawson is homeless, and struggling through community college, so he doesn't understand why someone as beautiful as she, would bother with someone like him. But he takes her offered hand, and as she pulls him off the park bench, she offers him a smile.
It was then that he realized that for the first time in years, everything would be alright.
They help each other get through college, they become friends, and...they fall in love.
They get engaged on a trip to Sweden, and it's the happiest he's ever been.
But it seemed all angels have to return to heaven, and she was no exception. On that fateful day, they're jogging together in the early morning, and she suddenly collapses. It only takes a matter of weeks until her body deteriorates to a state of no return, and the last words she ever tells him are;
"I love you, everything will be alright."
If only it had been so easy. She really had been the only thing keeping him together, but he refuses to drown in his sorrows. So he drinks, and drinks, anything to numb the pain of his broken heart. It makes him feel better and soon finds having a hangover in the morning as the norm. But then he reaches the day when he realizes the pain doesn't hurt as much anymore, and he doesn't need to drink to forget.
He's accepted her death, and he can move on.
Except he's still buying alcohol before he arrives home, and whenever he doesn't drink for several hours, his hands start to shake, desperate for a beer in his hand. It's a habit he can't seem to break, and it starts to change him. He has sex almost every night with strangers he doesn't plan on ever calling back, and he even becomes increasingly lax at work, though his students don't seem to mind the lower amounts of homework they have to do.
The alcohol makes him a shell of the man he once was when he was with her, and he can no longer recognize himself in the mirror.
It's been eight years since her death, and Emmett Dawson, drunk beyond all recognition, stumbles upon a general practitioner's office, begging for help. He thinks he's visiting a psychiatrist, and the doctor, unable to turn down someone in need, let's him drunkenly vent...and flirt with him. And he comes back again and again.
It's on one of those rare days when he's clear-headed, that the guilt of what he's been doing eats at him, and he knows he needs to apologize for what he's been doing to the poor, probably exasperated doctor. So he goes to him, sober and extremely apologetic, assuring him that he would not come back and bother him with his ridiculous little trifles again.
"Wait." The doctor, Lawrence Skye, says to him as he turns to leave his home. Emmett freezes, uncertainty written all over his features as he looks back at the other man. "Although I am not a doctor of the mind, I still cannot allow you to leave in such a state. It would be irresponsible of me."
Emmett is quick to shake his head, bating his hand as to wave away the other man's concern. "It's okay, doc, I don't need anything." But Lawrence was not one to take no for an answer, almost as stubborn as he was.
"Please, let me help you."
Those words make Emmett freeze, and he's not sure whether to laugh or cry at that very moment.
Funny, he didn't think he deserved another angel.
the teacher offers him a chance of happiness, and the doctor, gently taking a hold of his heart, vows to save him from his own demons in return.
