HISTORY
eleya was born in the aftermath of an unfortunate era. when men turned on dragons and dragons turned on men, earth became a bloodbath meandered by fear. man spared none. even the docile dragons that chose to seclude themselves from the human world and took no part in acts of war were tracked and slain; a means of fame and lots of coin for the oh-so brave bountymen recruited to bring back their devil claws.
miraciously, her mother was among the rare survivor, a great dragon from the tundras with a mind as sharp as a renown bladesmith's mightiest sword. she had been around when the first forest sprouted, so she claimed. eleya cannot be sure, but she does know her mother had skin beyond camouflage, and a way with words that captivated even the hardiest man.
mother told stories of their origin, beautiful and dark and everything in between, as she pulled eleya snug under her wing. she spoke to her like she had been with her far longer than just an impossibly small fraction of her life. that comfort is the most tender memory eleya has.
soon she was taught how to disguise herself. "man loves nothing more than himself," mother said while they bathed in the moonlight atop their crystal nest, "and so man we must become."
men turned out to be damn fools. most of them were pigs swayed by a mere woman's presence and eleya found it mortifying even though mother promised it essential to their survival. but mother's wiles were far beyond her daughter's — the men she bedded were drunk with lust and promptly eaten without struggle. eleya did not have that power over them, nor did she have that desire. they were simply too awful.
life remained difficult, yet sustainable. the war against her ancestors was almost wiped from history in the years that followed but the stigma around dragons never faded. they were the subject of many myths, true or not; death and life and good and evil and elements personified. crazy mythical monsters with crazy mythical powers and blessings for eternity if you managed to capture one. apparently they liked shiny stuff, too, but eleya can't recall a moment she's ever wanted to hoard a bunch of human junk and sleep on it.
she was resting in the amethyst springs when they came. even while trying to stay silent they were obnoxious creatures. her claws pierced the crystal bed as she heard them enter the labyrinth. their heavy armor and unison steps, hushed whispers, muffled laughter, it shook her to the core.
a deep voice bounced off the sparkling walls. "lookit all this fine ore. mine this good an' be rich."
"the king will be elated over this discovery, surely."
"you think there's gold, too?"
"maybe. watch out for serpents if there is. a drunk huntsman from the tavern supposedly caught wind of a large one around this area."
a snort, and then, "greedy demons. see how they manage! they’ll wish they were a troll."
all this time and eleya still could not master her mother's prowess. where was mother now? she'd been gone too long... three nights since she set off to hunt after ordering eleya wait concealed. an unusual occurrence, for mother always returned the following nightfall.
the men split into groups necessary for the cavern's twists and turns. one drew nearer, and mead rank overwhelmed the cool moist air. there was one option, of course, the only one eleya had been taught to follow. so with a shudder she shifted, a tiny little helpless thing compared to her grandiose form, sinking below the shallow depths of the springs.
looking back, it's quite stupid she chose to do what she did. perhaps if she'd been wise like her mother it could have been avoided. maybe they would have retreated home content and unknowing. but eleya was young and very much unwise. she would rather spill their blood than submit to their pleasure.
it happened fast. so fast, in fact, it could be listed out just like this:
they came. she fought. they conquered.
our honorable knights found the girl during a scouting mission. they grabbed her from the cavern lake intent to save her life. to them she was a drowning damsel, you see, so shan't question their courageous hearts! she battled them as they brought her ashore, and battled them still as they tried to warm her. they believed this lady only delirious. but that is the state this wench staged. she fooled their hearts and swallowed them whole. a winged horror disguised as a maiden. i know, it is a condemnable evil! yet fear not! my men were prepared for such a foe. rumors of dragons returning kept them on their toes. on they went into battle to aid their fallen brethren. the beast's ruthlessness? hah! it was no match for our enhanced weaponry. it fell to its injuries and here it was brought. shackled beneath my castle dungeon, subdued by the old mage's strongest magick. behold! a testament to our power!
there in that abandoned dungeon eleya remains, feeding on the foolish men who wander into her prison and resting on piles of their bones. mother's been gone a long time now. eleya hasn't felt the sun's heat or the moon's energy or bathed in amethyst for eons. that kingdom has fallen, the ruler who kept her as a trophy gone, but she lives on, trapped by magick between crumbling rock walls.
