Back story:

Esca was the second born into a family with no father and a mother who was severely unwell, mentally and physically. His older brother left home once he had become of age to try out his own luck in the world. Esca still very young at this time, was forced to stay and live with his mother. They lived deep in poverty, behind in rent, electricity and water; all having recently been shut off.

He went for late night walks often, breathing in the tainted night air, detached from reality, safely nestled in that head of his, always deep in thought. His face guarding itself with an invisible mask implanted to it. It was reaching the fourth tick before sunrise, as he slipped through the slums of the big city. Esca passed by an empty side-street when he snapped back into focus. He heard laughter and muffled voices, mixed with angry ones coming from it. Intrigued, he almost leapt towards it, reaching the destination, he came across a group of burly men, huddled in a circle, surrounding a bunch of cards.

In that moment, was when he discovered gambling, and the start of his life ending. The men felt his presence, stealing quick glances at each other, eyes unreadable and offered Esca a game. At first he refused, unsure how to play. A lanky man with a crooked smile stepped forward and volunteered to teach him - with a deal though, he had to play, he was even kind enough to use his own money and allowed Esca to keep what ever he won. After going through the basics a couple of times, the men grew restless and decided it was time he play. He tried it; and won.

He went home that night, clasping the pouch of money in his hand. Thinking he was actually great at it, he went back the next night, he kept trying, and for a couple of weeks, he'd continue to win. That didn't last however, his luck soured and it turns out, the people he played with let him win on purpose, he wasn't aware of this so they tried to get him to play big, and when he did. He lost. He tried again, sure it was just a fluke - but with the same result.

He lost all that he won and more, he was growing desperate. He started to pickpocket, rummaging through the busy markets, spotting out his easy targets. When he realised that didn't get him more than enough, he got tired of it and tried a more dangerous game. Esca began going to stores and shove items into his heavy coat what he could potentially sell high, before creating a diversion and speedily getting himself out. The need for money grew.

When his brother came to visit him for Christmas, he even went as low as to steal all the contents from his wallet. It wasn't ever enough though, the greed took over him and not before long, he raised enough money. Not having learnt his lesson, and like any addict, he went back to try and gamble again.

Break:

That night had moved by quickly, still blurring in his mind. All he could remember was the anger. He scrunched his brow with his fingers as he felt a headache coming on, the other balancing a metal food tray. Distracted, he didn't see the foot move in front of him, he toppled over and sent his food flying across the room. Snickers were heard from the table next to him, he felt his anger flare, he quickly stood up and without hesitation, he clutched the boy responsible for tripping him by the collar and raised his fist.

That was as far as he got, he caught his own reflection in the boys widened and terrified eyes, he almost jolted at it and relaxed his grip on the shirt, sending the boy to the floor. Esca stepped back, his breathing coming in quick, sharp heavy pants. He took in a deep breath and looked around him at all the startled faces. Feeling all exposed, he quickly pulls his invisible mask back on, dusts himself off and hurriedly brushes out of the room.

Stumbling out into the courtyard, Esca began breathing rapidly and moved back against the wall, and slumped onto the floor. Closing his eyes, he clenched his fists until the knuckles turned white, then unclenched them trying to calm himself down. He did this a few times, until his shoulders relaxed and all the tension left his body.Minutes passed and everything was deathly silent, even his breathing made no noise. When Esca listened quietly for a few minutes, neither a faint echo of a raven or the rustle of a rabbit reached his ears. Instinctively, Esca knew he should not be here, he got up and began to make his way back inside. Before he even made much progress, he heard a loud cough behind him. Startled the pale youth turned around and came face to face with a man, not even a foot away, staring right at him.

There was no rational thought process as he fled and he didn't know where to go; only that he was going to get away as fast as possible. He didn't get far, speeding down the hallway, he had whipped his head back for second to see if it was trying to come after him and it now stood as a dark shadow right in front of him. It's stoic expression making him uneasy. The shadows swallowing the room coated him like a cloak, giving Esca the impression he was the Angel of Death. He felt too scared and weak to move properly. The thing came closer, causing him to back up into a wall. He stared at him with wide, fearful eyes, slightly panting. His heart was racing and he could feel cold sweat pooling under his armpits. He tripped over his feet, trying to get away from him. He didn't get any further than that. When he looked back at the man, his lips were pulled back in a triumphant snarl. Pain flared in his head and he saw white, before everything went black. The dark figure placed a hand on his shoulder and sighed.

Break:

It was cold and dark. Somewhere in the distance he could hear sound, but everything was distorted, as if he were under water. Esca swallowed thickly and grimaced as he tasted blood. A weight on his chest was crushing him, leaving him breathless.

He groaned when he tried to open his eyes. They were crusty and itchy and it took him five efforts to finally open them fully. He thought he was going to be sick when everything spun around him. His breath came in short gasps, and it was only when he tried to move that he realized he was lying down on a bed, his arms bound above his head. He tiredly tried to lift his head, but it fell back against the bed. He groaned again.

He tried moving his wrists around the bonds, but quickly stopped when an audible click was heard behind him. The same figure from before came towards him and rested a hand on his shoulder, squeezing just a little too hard. He tried to pull away, but his grip was too strong. He ruffled through his hair.

"What do you want from me?" Esca managed to get out. He got a good look at the man when he had approached closer. The figure definitely resembled a man, he was wrapped up in a baggy black material from his neck down, a scarf pooled around his neck and up to his mouth making it hard to read it's expression, while a messy flop of unnaturally white hair hugged his face. The parts that made him believe otherwise was the inhuman qualities to him too. Attached to either side of his head were two curled black horns and he also had a long tail that swished out behind him.

The figure stared at him for a moment with its piercing yellow yes before speaking.

"A deal."
