It was cold all of the time where we grew up. I remember waking up in the lower bunk while it was still dark outside and wiggling my numb toes to feel sensation. My mom kept the house at 68 degrees. The heating bill was too expensive already.
I turned over to see my sister in the bed next to mine, her chin tilted to the ceiling, and soft snores leaving her nose. My sister had a surgery coming up for her nose. I hated the idea of her being in pain. But she wanted a nose like a normal person. My other sister slept on the bunk on top of her, and she slept silently. She had a normal person nose.
Then, I would kick the bed on top of mine, kick twice and whisper, "you awake?"
"Stop kicking me, yes, I'm awake," my brother whispered back.
"You know what today is?"
"No, what's today?"
"Mao's birthday."
"You made that up."
Mao was our bear-like black cat. He lumbered around the house, sniffing around the corners, meowing for me to open the window for him to go outside. I didn't want him to go outside though. I believed there were coyotes out.
"Sure, I made it up, but it could be Mao's birthday. You don't know," I sniped.
"I'm going back to sleep." I could hear the thud of the mattress where my brother turned over on his side.
"Fine," I rolled my eyes and crawled out of bed, a shiver shooting up my spine as my feet touched the cold floor.
My oldest sister got her own room. I always thought that was super lame that I had to share a room with my two sisters and my brother and she got her own room. Whatever.
I knocked on her door quietly. "Hey, you up?"
"Sure, why?" Her voice came back to me through the door.
"Do you want to have a birthday party for Mao today?"
It was quiet for a second. "I'll think about it."
"Okay," I replied and walked out of the hallway into the dining room. Mao was sleeping on the table. He lifted his eyes silently telling me, "if you tell Mom I'm on the table, you're finished."
Fair enough.
I crawled up the stairs to my mom's bedroom. I hovered outside of her room, my fist raised to knock on her door. I could hear her snoring from where I stood.
I finally lowered my fist and decided against waking her. She was up all night studying I'd reckon, and wouldn't be that happy to know about Mao's party.
Things were okay.
