DON'T GO INTO THE LIGHT

Are you afraid to die? It’s a thought we all have at one point or another. For most people the answer is a resounding yes. And why shouldn’t it be? It’s hard-wired into every being on Earth; fear that ever-encroaching expiration for you do not know what comes after.

But what if death were a loved one; would you welcome its embrace? If it held a candle in the dark, would you follow its guiding light?

Death is indiscriminate of both saints and sinners. Whether you’ve lived a life of adventure or inaction, the greatest journey you embark on will be your last. Some believe it will be a river; the confluence of life and death itself. For others, a skybound stairway leading to those great pearly gates we all strive to reach. Or perhaps your final odyssey will be in pursuit of a distant, hopeful light, glistening through the gloom of a deep, somber tunnel. At the end of the tunnel is said to be some sort of entity, a thing.

A kind of ill-fated “chaperone of the dead”, this spirit is believed by many to guide each lost soul through to the afterlife. The phantom radiates an enigmatic glow in stark defiance to the tunnel, so daunting and dim. To meet the being face to “face” is to transcend into the great beyond. Those that claim to have seen it describe only the blinding inferno of a lantern and the chilling gaze of its skull glaring back at them. For one reason or another, these survivors — if you can even call them that — were deemed unworthy to suffer their demise, and instead live on to spread a caution: do not walk into the light; fear it, for you do not know what comes after.
