& Crookshanks the Criminalsteaks

Hermine was what most people would call a book worm, although the others in her year group at school preferred to call her a keener. She would get so utterly engrossed in a book that she would be completely unaware of anything happening around her. She had been sitting in the playground at school and didn't notice the fire alarms going off; even when the other students lined up for roll call around her.
Each morning Hermine would set her alarm clock 30 minutes early, to allow herself some time to read a few more chapters of her favourite books. Her mother had a second alarm clock set just outside the room to ensure that Hermine didn't read for so long that she was late for school.

Today was the first day of the Summer holidays. Hermine had been looking forward to the break for a while, especially because she would be moving up to senior school in September; a thought which filled her with both excitement for the new subjects she would be learning and dread at the potential reaction of her fellow students to her love of answering any questions the teachers asked.

The annoying beep of the alarm clock outside her room roused her from her book, and and she muttered quietly under breath at the fact that her mother would still set the alarm during her holiday. Hermine made her way grudgingly down the stairs for breakfast.
She hadn't much planned for the day, maybe some reading and a visit to the library. Both her parents would be at work today, although her mother had the day off tomorrow to allow them to go shopping for her new school books and uniform.... and of course a few new fiction books as well.
Hermine strolled through the kitchen, greeted her parents as she passed and reached for the box of cereal at the back of the cupboard. Normally her parents would insist on the healthiest, sugar-free cereal, but in the holidays they allowed her a different cereal. She had to agree to brush her teeth thoroughly afterwards, but that didn't deter Hermine from picking the most sugar-loaded cereals possible.

A muffled knock at the door caught her by surprise - hardly anybody visited their house and certainly not at this time of the morning. Hermine didn't think much of it at first, concentrating instead on picking out her favourite pieces of cereal from the packet; however she heard the person at the door mention her name. Still holding the cereal packet, she moved a little closer to the hallway to try and listen. However before she could reach the hall, the front door closed and her father returned, closely followed by an old man with a long white beard.

"Ah, you must be Miss Granger," the old man said, shaking her free hand before sitting down at the table. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything?" Hermine quickly put the cereal packet back on the worktop, as her mother shook her head. The presence of this strange man in their home appeared to have struck them dumb.

Once the family sat down, the man continued, "Allow me to introduce myself, I am Professor Dumbledore and I am here to extend an invitation to Miss Granger of a place at my school."
Hermine's jaw dropped, as she stared at the crazy Professor. She'd already accepted a place at the local secondary school, yet here he was, offering her a place at a different school.... without having even seen her before?

"Your name has been down on our list ever since you were born," he continued, having allowed them a few moments to recover from the shock. Looking at the expression of disbelief on Hermine's face, he rummaged in the pocket of his long coat and with a flourish, removed a rolled parchment scroll. Handing it to Hermine, he sat back and waited for her to open it.

Hermine took it from him and glanced at her parents; they were looking equally bewildered, but her mother nodded in encouragement. With fumbling hands, Hermine unrolled the parchment and started to read:

Dear Miss Granger,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.Term begins on September 1st - your acceptance by owl, which will be supplied for the journey by Professor Dumbledore, should arrive no later than July 31st.
Yours sincerely
Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress

Hermine stared blankly at the Professor for a few seconds, as she struggled to phrase her question coherently. "You mean all the things I can move without touching them, like the pages of a book.... that was magic?"
Professor Dumbledore nodded. "Yes, that is magic indeed. Although, if you take up your place at Hogwarts we will train you to use it properly; you would then be forbidden from using magic outside of school until you reach the age of 17."

After a short discussion with the Professor and what seems like hours passing in the space of a few short minutes, Hermine eagerly accepted her place at this new school. Her parents seemed just a little bemused and scared at the thought they had a witch in the family, but they knew she would be more likely to be accepted for her brains at Hogwarts than at the local senior school.

"I will send your acceptance on to Professor McGonagall," Professor Dumbledore said, "I have an owl waiting outside to carry the letter for me." Smiling at her parents' shocked expressions, Professor Dumbledore bade them farewell and left the house. Hermine glanced out of the front window, spotted a Tawny owl flying away from the Professor, as with a swish of his cloak, he vanished from sight.

With a smile, Hermine walked past her father's bowl of soggy cornflakes and back into the kitchen to finish preparing her breakfast. Maybe the next school year wasn't going to be quite as bad as she'd thought.

Hermine placed her Eagle feather quill down beside her parchment. She doubted that the Wizarding world would ever approve of her story, especially when they realised it was to be aimed at Muggle children. Being a mere third year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she would be an easy target for the Ministry of Magic to make an example of. It had been fun to write, but what she needed to complete her story, was a pseudonym; something that sounded so Muggle-like, that the Ministry would think it was simply a Muggle with an overactive imagination. After a few moments of thought, she smiled and picked up the quill once more. Carefully dipping it into the inkwell, she signed the name JK Rowling on the base of the parchment.

Note
Keener is a typically British term used to describe someone who is brainy (especially those who always put their hand up in class to answer the questions). It's similar to "swot".
