Top Dog of Dreams

I Paraphlaxes, semi-mortal son of Peroniul, god of the unseen and unknown, have witnessed through aeons, the degradation of the belief systems which rule creatures and gods alike. Nevermore can I believe the simplicity of the idea that god created creature, an idea which is hammered into gods, demi-gods and mortals from birth. From my peak nestled in Darkside, Subeta, I have witnessed the ages pass and the ever changing relationship between creature and God. No single event has moulded my ideas about the relationship between the mortal and immortal as much as the banishment of the guardian and god of Canis Major, the one Hopeful.

At first it was simple, the humans and creatures of Subeta revered the gods, looking up to them in the night sky, feeling their aura, their energy, strongest at times when Atebus was in darkness. However human progress did not want to be limited to daylight hours, and thus, began building devices of light. As society progressed, they felt they had fewer uses for the gods, and thus, made their devices brighter and brighter, giving them full command of light in darkness, a guidance that once only the stars and moon could give. With every new light, the stars would fade a little, with some constellations disappearing all together in the cities. It was in the cities where belief in the gods dropped to an all time low, and while more believers did remain in the country side, where the stars could be viewed with less obstruction, the damage was being done to the gods, their influence on Subeta was waning.

Thus the gods sent 3 messengers with warnings, all of which were ignored by the city dwellers. Feeling like they were losing their grip on not only Subeta but as a result all of reality, the gods felt, they could only do one thing, destroy the devices which the people used to drown out the light of the gods. Thus the gods entered a rampage on Subeta, razing cities and laying waste to towns. However the devices which the Humans had created were far beyond anything the gods had ever imagined. This was unthinkable, for it was known in their doctrine that the gods created the humans, thus, it was thought that humans could never exceed gods. Thus after a particularly bloody struggle which saw the gods knocked off their high horse, Hopeful was sent, with the orders to befriend the humans and relay their secrets to the gods.

As Hopefuls constellation contained the power of Sirius, he was in little danger of being completely snuffed out by even the brightest of lights, For if every god fell, he would still remain. Sirius was transported to earth, amongst the creatures of Subeta. His first action was to head to Centropolis, the bane of the gods where the most precious of humanities devices lay. At first the city lights blinded him, they burned him, and with the people around him, focusing on their toys, he felt little more than invisible. With the gods hatred of this place confirmed in his mind, he decided to set about darkening the land. He met up with a young engineer from a power company. It was from him that he learned that the centre of the power which caused devices to emit the blinding lights came from power stations.

Hopeful was somewhat shocked by this discovery as he had the idea that each person would be generating this power for themselves, as the gods would do but in this society, they seemed to share the power. Upon investigating further, he came to the realisation that through this power, which humans called electricity, people could further share resources and unite to solve a whole bunch of different problems. Where once people relied on the gods to solve their problems with the gods responding, depending on how they felt, people now had the power in their own hands to help themselves. Their toys had meant that they themselves were no longer mere playthings for the gods and could actually live with dignity. Throughout the next few months, Hopeful saw the humans working together, communicating, with electricity as their fuel. To take it all away, would be to take away their humility, leave them merciless to the gods again. To leave it would certainly mean the extinction of gods from the city. But maybe they didn't need the gods in the city.

Hopeful took a trip to he countryside, and he looked up at the stars. They were there, burning bright as they ever did and he realised the gods still had reign over what happened out here. He even came to realise that many people in the countryside still worshipped the gods, and could still listen to them, though they now had the ability to chose their own paths thanks to the progress from the city. Destroying these processes were no longer viable. Watching people work together for the benefit of the community and seeing how far technology allowed them to do caused him to reverse his ideas. When time came to report back to the gods, he told them it was them who should back off. Furthermore, Hopeful expressed that he would far more like to live amongst the creatures than the gods. Infuriated, the gods called for the execution of Hopeful for treason. They began by stripping him of his mortality, which they did successfully, so they could perform the deed. However Hopeful had learned a trick from the humans. He was able to sneak a sheet of magnesium to the meeting, which remained hidden during the council. At the moment, just before his death, he threw the magnesium into the flames of perdition, which created a bright light, which faded the gods power to beyond uselessness. Hopeful was able to make his escape back to Subeta, where he made his way to Centropolis for safety.

When the gods powers returned, they were unable to take action on Hopeful, as their powers had faded so much in the bright lights of the city they were beyond useless. Thus Hopeful was destined to walk the city, too fearful to go out into the country side where the wrath of the gods would be able to reach him. The lights took a while to get used to and the pollution is off putting at times, but a majority of people liked to live in the city, and Hopeful could see why. He knew he would eventually have to find ways to maintain the gods influence on places of the earth, so they did not disappear, but for now the city could rest free from interference.

Thus I must depart from the story of Hopeful. While his story doesn't end there, my telling of it must, as it was there, where I as able to witness humanities ability for creation and destruction and begin to wonder, who created who?

2-1

"2-1"

First the earth was flat
But it fattened up when we didn't fall off
Now we spin laps round the sun

All the gods lost 2-1
And holes to heaven pointed out to us from light years away
We're surrounded by a billion galaxies

Things are not always
Things are not always how they seem
Will you be ready?
Will you be ready?

The interim of life
Has got you tiptoed and pinning all your hopes
On the top dog of dreams

You're not alone in this
The polyfilla way looks strong in the weakness
Of the gaps

Things are not always
Things are not always how they seem
They don't turn out always
Don't quite turn out always how we think
Will we be ready?
Will we be ready?

I'm dying to know, what's in your head
I'm dying to know, how it all got in there
I'm dying to know, to help make some sense of it all
I'm dying to know
Tell me is it my fault?

And I care about you, darling

And I care about you
Course I care about you
More than anyone else

Things are not always
Things are not always how they seem
They don't turn out always
Don't quite turn out always how we think
Will we be ready?
