His older brother, Demetrio, loved listening to him play and Ilario would often play private concerts for him in the music study. The two were always close and loved spending all their time together; they even made friendship bracelets for each other. But as they both got older, they seemed to grow even closer, eventually falling in love. Knowing how their kind of relationship was considered wrong, they kept it hidden from everyone.
Sadly, the day came when Demetrio had to go and fight for their country. Ilario and their parents saw him off, and it took every fiber of Ilario's being to not give his brother the farewell kiss he so desperately wanted to. The days went by slowly after Demetrio left. Ilario didn't play as much as he before and refused to play any concerts. The only time Ilario's spirits lifted was when he received letters from Demetrio detailing his exploits.
A year passed and Ilario's father, much like many people in their small town, fell victim to the mob. His father's debts piled up quickly and the mob took their house. At the end of his rope, Ilario's father made one final move to save himself and his wife. He offered to sell Ilario to the mob in hopes that his musical genius would pique the Don's interest.
For years, Ilario worked for the mob, bringing in money for them from performing concerts. He wasn't happy, but he knew that as long as he did what he was told, he wouldn't be harmed. And even though it had been years since he had seen his beloved brother, Ilario never give up hope of seeing Demetrio again.
One evening, Ilario was in the music study dusting off the piano. He could hear his boss talking with someone down the hall. As the voices drew closer, something in his heart knew he had heard the other voice somewhere before, but he just couldn't put his finger on it.
When he heard the doorknob click, he stood up straight and adjusted his vest. His boss entered the room, and following him was Demetrio. Before anyone could say a single word, Ilario ran to Demetrio with tears in his eyes. Demetrio didn't even hesitate to wrap his arms around his brother. They were finally together again and all Ilario could think of was how much better things would be.
The Don left them in peace for a few brief minutes, then returned holding a folded document. He explained to the two of them that he had no need to keep Ilario's contract upheld, and set it aflame with his cigar. They thanked him and returned their old home so they could live in peace. From then on, Ilario played music more beautiful than ever before.
