As he was rearranging the cinnamon buns in the display counter to make sure that it looked as inviting as possible the bell on the door sounded, alerting him to the fact that a potential customer had just entered his little shop of baked goods. All of which he’d made himself. With a big genuine smile he looked up as he greeted the man that had just walked in.
-”Good morning!” The dark haired and pretty handsome man on the other side of the counter returned the smile.
-”Good morning.”
-”What would you like? I have a wide variety of baked goods on offer.” The man looked down at the stuff in the counter and judging by the expression on his face Iori figured that he was impressed by it. A sense of pride swelled up inside him. When the man finally looked at him again he had a slightly sheepish grin.
-”I...honestly don’t know. It all looks so good. What would you recommend?” It was rare for someone to ask for his recommendation. Usually people just knew what they wanted. This turn of events had Iori baffled for a few seconds. Running through his mind were parameters that needed to be established for him to know what to recommend. Things like this should not be taken lightly. If you wanted someone to come back for more, and to spread the word to all of their friends, you had to be smart. It had to be the perfect recommendation.
-”Do you have a favorite taste? Is there anything that you don’t like? And is there any allergies that I need to take into consideration? Also, do you prefer sweet, savory or maybe sour? Or maybe a mix?” The stranger chuckled a bit.
-”Wow. That’s a lot of questions. You certainly take this seriously, don’t you?”
-”Well, it’s my livelihood and my passion. So yes, I take it seriously. Besides, I love it when people’s faces light up as they taste my creations so naturally I want to make the perfect choice.”
-”Well, color me impressed. The world could use more people with burning passions like you.” He smiled at Iori. A smile that almost made Iori blush. “And since I’ll be divulging such personal information to you.” He winked at Iori. “I think it only prudent that we’re introduced. I’m Aaron.” Iori shook his head a little and chuckled.
-”You’re silly. I’m...Iori.”
-”It’s a pleasure to meet you, Iori. Now, to answer your questions. I don’t really have anything that I don’t like, tastewise. No allergies, that I’m aware of anyway. And I like sweet, savory, sour and mixes of those. But I’d say that sweet stuff is my ultimate weakness.” Iori chuckled again.
-”That doesn’t really narrow things down a lot. Or at all. But...do you like chocolate?” Aaron smiled.
-”I love chocolate.” Walking over to where the chocolate flavored goods were he contemplated for a little bit before reaching in and picking a chocolate truffle cupcake and showing it to Aaron.
-”How about this one?”
-”That looks...delicious! Out of pure curiosity. What made you pick that one?”
-”You said you love chocolate and sweet. And as much as I love all of the stuff I make, cupcakes have always been my personal favorites.”
-”Fair enough. I’ll take it!”

Every day after that initial one Aaron stopped by on his lunch break and tried different things every time. Now, Iori was looking forward to his visits more than he ever thought he would. And, he wasn’t sure but he could have sworn that Aaron had started flirting with him the last few days. Only innocent little stuff like complementing what he was wearing, the way he’d done his hair that day or telling him how much he liked seeing Iori smile and to hear him laugh. He looked at the clock on the wall. Almost noon. He would be here soon. For the last two weeks he’d walked through the door just before noon. His daydreaming was cut short as the bell on the door rang and Aaron once again walked into his shop.
-”Hi.” He looked happier than usual today, Iori thought as he smiled back at him.
-”Hey. What will it be today?”
-”I need something that would be fitting for a picnic.” Iori started looking around at the stuff on offer before settling on a slice of apple pie. He started taking a slice out when Aaron interrupted him. “Make it two slices.” It took all of Iori’s willpower to not show the pain he felt in his chest just then. He wanted two slices. The man that always just got one of everything he ordered suddenly wanted two slices of pie? In his mind Iori was calling himself an idiot for even thinking that anything could ever happen between them. Aaron was probably straight and was about to have a lovely picnic with his girlfriend...or wife. “Is everything alright?” The sound of his voice brought Iori back to reality again and he realized that he’d just been standing there holding two slices of pie. Like an idiot. He gave Aaron a fake smile. It was all he could muster right now.
-”Yeah. Everything’s fine. Just had a little brain fart, that’s all.” Aaron smiled at him.
-”I’m glad to hear that. You had me worried. Thought I might have to bring you to the hospital or something.” Iori gave him a questioning look.
-”Why would you...” He didn’t get a chance to finish the sentence before Aaron spoke again.
-”You see, I was hoping that you’d share a slice of pie with me.” Iori was at a loss for words. He felt dumbfounded. Did he just ask Iori to join him for the picnic. Had the second slice been for him all along? “You do want to come don’t you?”
-”Yes. I just...” Iori shook his head. “I just thought that the other slice was for someone else.” Aaron made his way around the counter so that he was standing right next to him.
-”Now, I know that I’m not the best at flirting but I was pretty sure that I’d made it clear that I was very interested in you.” Iori smiled shyly.
-”You did. I guess my mind was just being silly. I get that way when something seems too good to be true.” Aaron cupped Iori’s cheeks in his hands and looked him straight in the eyes.
-”You’d better believe it, because it’s one hundred percent true.” And then their lips met in a tender kiss.
