Iwen couldn't remember much about life before the experiments. Not that he could remember much during either. He couldn't forget the agony he was in every night. The mutations that erupted and the cackles from that "Doctor" every time his body morphed into something even more abnormal looking than before. Then his salvation came one day as the Doctor carried out his plans to document the effects of electroshock therapy on Iwen. All of the previous experimentation had finally found a purpose, as the waves ricocheted off of Iwen's scales and rebounded on the Doctor, ending his life instantly. Vision blurred and horribly emaciated, Iwen dragged himself through the old warehouse and out into the light of day. A kind person happened upon him and helped nurse him back to health before he crawled away to the Darkside where he lives in new happiness among the volcanic ash. Once settled in, he became a smuggler for Blackheart Hollow.

While at the warehouse, he was known only by a number, his rescuers gave him the name Iwen due to finding his almost dead form under a Yew tree before they helped bring him back to life.
