TRANQUILLI-TEA
Dust cultivated on the highest oak shelves of the snug little shop. Hundreds of dinky little boxes filled with a vast array of tea leaves. Each one hand-packed, priced and placed by a delightful red panda named Karla. She bore a velvet-brown coat of fur, with paws and tail dark as the ash of fires long-gone. Her eyes gleamed a hickory-brown, warm and inviting as the very store she curated. This pint-sized panda had been the caretaker of the shop ever since her grandmother left it for her many years ago. On this particular day, Karla had decided to take note of her inventory, lest she run out of matcha again. For such a peaceful drink, you’d be surprised just how rowdy tea-drinkers can be when they run out of supply.

Carefully, she slid the ladder further along down the shelf. It creaked ever-so-slightly as the aged wooden rungs held the weight of their owner, supporting her all the way to the top of the shelf. As her keen eyes skimmed over each row, a sense of pride ran through her. Organised so precisely, everything had a home. Each box hand-crafted by artisans long passed, they would last generations to come. You see, the store was part of the foundation her very village was built on. Along with the first few dwellings; bakery, hunter’s hut and the old lord’s manor, that quaint establishment had weathered the years all the same. So even though inheriting an old tea shop wasn’t where Karla predicted life would take her, she would do her damndest to mind over the age-old business.

After surveying each and every tier, Karla had drafted a list of every tea she’d need to purchase at the market. However; the day was much too early for shopping. The merchants and farmers would only just now be unloading their produce and wares. So after setting down a couple of old tables and chairs outside, she decided to brew a warm pot of sweet petal tea, a favourite of hers. Lazily she ambled through the store, just dimly lit by the early morning sky. Light shades of amber bled through the curtains, creating an illusion of the faintest of fires dancing over the hardwood floor.

As she reached her desired tea, Karla slid the box out and scooped out just enough for one cup. The gentle grinding of porcelain against porcelain was the only sound that could be heard as she placed the saucer down in the back room. Steam bellowed out of the pot to her right, like a delicate little steam train, as the water grew near to boiling. She steeped the petals down into the pot, inhaling the fragrant scent as the tea began to infuse. To her, there was no greater feeling than to start the day off with a healing concoction of aromas, robust tea and pleasantly warm water.

Soon after, Karla was happily stirring the freshly brewed tea, taking the time to enjoy every sip. She glanced over to the clock and found herself startled to see the little hand closing in on the seven, as the big hand pulled time forward one tick and tock at a time. She chuckled to herself and decided it was about time she head to the market. Downing the last of the tea, she hurried along to the front door and eagerly turned its handle. A cool breeze ebbed its way through the doorway as she took in a deep breath, ready to start a new day.
