The zombie apocalypse did not disappoint the doomsayers, to say the least. As the first cases began to appear, the world shivered as the undead began to attack the living, casualties mounting in all major cities and states. However, within weeks, strange reports began to surface of the undead fighting amongst themselves- or rather, a one-sided battle taking place amid their ranks. The newcomers were not the rotting undead, but rather, slightly pale humans who were able to dispatch the ravenous hordes with ease, moving among them with casual abandon and ignored by the zombies.As expected, locating any of these individuals was a challenge, especially when fighting an undead war. As soon as a battle was under control, the strange humans vanished.

Whether prompted by the attempts at contact, or by chance, the world leaders were finally approached by a single individual. Only a little was learned from the short exchange, since it was a rushed affair after a large engagement. The strange fellow only said their charismatic leader, known as 'the Kikster,' had organized thousands of them to help fight the undead on the human’s behalf. This 'altered' individual as they called themselves apparently, never seemed to have a negative thing to say about their leader.

The individual then left, one of the 'altered' not contacting the humans until the next major battle. This time, the major human leaders were granted an interview, with many apologies at the lateness of it.

A delegation was led to a settlement in the forested mountains and beheld what appeared to a refugee camp. What was lacking however, were guards, food, water, and any other manner of supplies save close combat weapons. Being directed into a massive green tent, they were greeted warmly by a strange fellow in a black coat and combat boots, messy black hair brushed out of his eyes.

Shaking each of the delegate's hands, one couldn't help but notice the man's were strangely cold.

"Welcome, welcome! I apologize for the lateness of this meeting, but the world is a busy place nowadays, no?" The man chuckled, sitting down at a simple table with chairs already set in place. "Well, I shall get straight to the point. To answer the two biggest questions; who am I, and who are we, it is rather simple. We are the 'altered.' By that, I mean the zombie bites did not change us to the undead corpses, but rather some odd in-between state. No eating or anything, just…here. So, that leads into the other part of the 'who.' My name is Kiks - but you will only hear me referred to as 'the Kikster.' I believe the latest joke was that I 'Kikstarted' many of these people's lives…" The man let out a slight huff, shaking his head with a smile.

"As for me, I've always led, it's the role I've fallen into. Those who wander in this altered state are directed here and given a purpose in a world that doesn't know what to do with them. To that end, we fight on behalf of all you humans. We still retain our humanity, so why should we not fight for it?"Seeing the rather stunned delegates, Kiks simply chuckled as a distant horn sounded. The man walked over to the entrance of the tent, snagging a spiked baseball bat that was handed to him.

"Now then, it appears you've attracted some unwanted attention. We will see to that as you consider any more questions for when I return."

The delegates could only blink in amazement as the leader joined his fellow survivors to go defend against the newest swarm of undead, no rank known among common altered humans.

A leader indeed.
