Kosmo was initially worried about going to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His family had just moved to Great Britain from China and he barely knew enough English to read his letter. Thankfully, his letter was delivered by a strange man dressed in a long blue robe. The man had called himself Professor Dumbledore and had explained that he was the Headmaster of a magic school. Kosmo hadn't known much of magic, other than pulling rabbits out of hats and sawing girls in half - which apparently, was not real magic.

His lack of English had been a huge barrier when he arrived at school. Immersion into the culture, his father had called it - Kosmo thought it was more like tossing him into a fire. It was tricky enough trying to learn the foreign language, but keeping up with the new magical learning as well had made Kosmo's first year at Hogwarts a difficult one. He spent most of his spare time in the farthest corner of the Gryffindor common room, trying to cram everything he could into his aching brain. The best part of the year, even factoring in the amazing Triwizard Tournament, was that Hermione Granger had helped him once with some of his lessons. If he admitted it to himself, he was star-struck. The brightest girl in the school had actually noticed him.

During the summer, his father had signed him up for an English as a second language course that the local college was doing. His mother had taken him to every event the towns nearby held. The results of their efforts had given Kosmo more confidence with speaking and understanding English. He even worked up the nerve to have a conversation with the Postman; who, it turned out, knew a lot about lawn care - often receiving gardening tips as he delivered parcels from house to house. However, his biggest surprise came when Kosmo's parents took him Diagon Alley to buy his school supplies. They had just finished buying some elaborate quills and ink when his father ushered him into a shop called Magical Menagerie. "I asked in the last shop, where we can buy you a pet," his father explained, "go pick out a friend, my son."

Kosmo blinked back the tears that were threatening to escape and concentrated on pursuing the odd animals that cluttered the store. His eyes darted from rats that were playing skip rope with each other's tails, to strangely glowing snails - he could have spent a week in there and not have gotten bored. Finally, he found a cage with a squirrel-like animal curled into a ball. It seemed to have sensed that it was being watched, because at that moment it stretched out and yawned. The large blue eyes blinked at him and Kosmo had to have the little tyke. The sales lady said it was called a Lullabit and would sing soft tunes, causing people to feel like taking a nap. After hugging and thanking his parents, Kosmo felt like he was on cloud nine. His second year would be so much better with his improved English and his new friend.

Popoko, the Lullabit, was quietly singing in Kosmo's pocket as he petted the creature to calm his nerves. The train had just started to depart for Hogwarts and he had not been able to find an empty compartment and now he was going to have to ask a group to let him sit with them. He found a compartment with some of his fellow second years who were all obviously Ravenclaws with their blue and bronze coloured ties and Eagle crests on their robes. Timidly, Komso knocked on the door managed to ask if he could join them. A pair of identical blonde girls sat on one side and a mousy brown haired boy sat on the other. They waved him in and carried on chatting as if they'd never been interrupted.
"Yeah," said one of the two blonde girls, "the strange Granger girl came up to me and asked if I wanted to join Spew."
"Rhonda, you twit," replied her sister, "that was S.P.E.W."
"What's S.P.E.W?" asked the boy.
"Some stupid anti house-elf thing," replied Rhonda. "I didn't really listen much after I realized that it had nothing to do with Harry Potter." Both girls giggled at Harry's name and then the conversation shifted to the topic of cute Quidditch players. Kosmo watched out the window as the train progressed, wondering what a house-elf was. Popoko must have lulled him to sleep as the next thing Kosmo was aware of was being awakened by someone shaking his shoulder. The train had stopped and everyone was rushing towards the door.

A fortnight passed by and to Kosmo's joy, he was doing well in his classes and felt a lot more comfortable in general. He still had no other friends than his little Lullibit, but he also didn't seem to mind as much. He would study in the library until he was sent off to his dormitories - and then he'd sit in the common room studying into the wee hours of the morning. One such morning, Kosmo heard a small scuffling beside the fire that caused him to wake from his unintentional slumber. He opened his eyes and blinked them as they came into focus on a strange creature. Standing before him, was a short - slightly grey figure with the longest nose and ears Kosmo had ever seen.
"W-w-what are you?" Kosmo asked. Overcoming his initial shock, he realized he sounded a bit rude. "Who are you?" he amended.
"I is Dobby, sir. Dobby, the house elf." Dobby bowed so low his nose touched the floor.
"So you are a house-elf! Hermione Granger has an organization to help free you guys."
"Dobby is grateful to Hermione Granger for her concern, sir. Most house elves do not want being set free."
"Are you a free elf?" Kosmo asked. He noticed Dobby's mismatched socks and added, "I like your socks by the way."
"Yes, sir," Dobby replied, standing proudly, "Dobby is a free elf, sir. Dobby likes socks, sir. They is the first clothing Dobby received to become a free elf. Dobby must be going, sir. Dobby is needed in the kitchens."
"May I come and see you in the kitchens, Dobby?"
Dobby smiled saying, "Dobby would like that very much, sir." After giving him instructions on how to get into the kitchens, Dobby vanished out of the room with nothing but a quick cracking sound.
Kosmo couldn't believe how happy he was. He'd just met his first house elf, had directions to get in the kitchens and meet more of them and Hermione Granger knew them. Kosmo scooped his Lullibit up into his hands and headed towards his dormitory. Maybe he could now join Hermione's campaign to free elves.

Kosmo tickled the pear in the picture of the fruit bowl, as instructed by Dobby, and a handle appeared. Next thing he knew, Kosmo was inside the kitchens surrounded by house elves. Beaming from ear to ear, he watched as all the elves bustled about to and fro. In short order, he was supplied with a table and a chair. Before he had even been able to sit, a massive tray full of confectionery goodies arrived - including several Chinese deserts. In awe, Kosmo ate and watched the house elves quietly at first. A few of the elves even brought lettuce and carrots for Popoko to eat. Reluctantly, Kosmo noticed the time and said his fair wells to the enchanting elves and headed off to his dormitories. On his way, he happened upon Hermione Granger. She was on the staircase in the mist of picking up all her books that were scattered about the place. Bending down to help, Kosmo plucked up the courage to talk to her. "Does your bag break often?" he asked handing her the books closest to him.
"All the time, I'm afraid. It's a good thing I've mastered the 'repairo' spell," she replied slightly exasperated.
"Er, Hermione," Kosmo squeaked, "I was wondering if I could join S.P.E.W.? I heard about it on the Hogwarts Express first term and I've been reading about the house elves enslavement ever since."
"Absolutely!" she exclaimed smiling brightly. "Why don't you be the secretary? Only, listen, Harry Potter is officially the secretary; but he doesn't really seem keen on the job."
"We don't have to tell him I have the role," Kosmo beamed, "it can be just between us."
Hermione smiled and took the last of the books from Kosmo's hand. They completed their trek to their common room in silence.

Kosmo finally had a friend at Hogwarts - Dobby. When Christmas time had come, both of them had exchanged presents. Dobby had knitted him some socks of his Lullibit. One was cream with the creature curled in a ball and just his eyes open. The other was bright blue with a Lullibit holding a carolling book. Kosmo also had given Dobby socks. They were little owls embroidered on them. Kosmo he had found them in a Muggle shopping catalogue his parents had sent him

Over the final few weeks of the term, Kosmo spent all his free time in the kitchens at the make-shift desk they had prepared for him. He had been very careful not to mention house elf freedom to anyone. He had made the mistake of that his second time in the kitchens. They sourly handed him 3 hams and a roasted pheasant before bowing him out. But now they would help him with his homework and talk to him freely - so long as he kept his mouth shut about S.P.E.W. Dobby was still his favourite house elf to talk to though. On the final day of his second term at Hogwarts, Dobby popped into his dormitory to ask if he could send letters to Kosmo during the summer. With the thought of letters to look forward to Kosmo enjoyed the train ride home. He had a friend, a pet and a cause - house elf liberation. After all they had done for him, Kosmo decided he would help them all one day to have freedom.

Kosmo stood in front of the grave, bowing deeply. The weather had faded the crude carvings on the stone marking the grave, but he could still make out "Here lies Dobby, a free elf." It had taken years for Kosmo to be ready to find Shell Cottage. He missed his strange friend more than he could put into words. But he was here now. Kosmo knelt down and kissed the stone and whispered, "Dobby, I did it. I freed the elves. I wanted to you know." He waved his wand and a beautiful assortment of flowers appeared on the stone. He pulled out a solitary multi-coloured sock from inside his coat pocket and set it beside the flowers. After Hogwarts, Kosmo went around the world studying house elves. He founded the House Liberation Front, which was now integrated with the Ministry of Magic in the department with Goblin Liaisons. Kosmo had done what Hermione Granger had set out to do; he freed the house elves from their magical contracts and set up new ways for them to be treated. It was still new and fraught with complications, but Kosmo felt he'd finally honoured his friend. Waving his wand once more, he etched, into the stone, the logo of the House Liberation Front: Dobby's face with a sock and wand crossed - surrounding this were the words: "Together, we are stronger."

Kreacher arrived with the familiar cracking sound of magic. He was wearing a black pinstripe suit and top hat. Once the old elf embraced freedom, he showed a remarkable fashion sense. "Kreacher is happy to be finding you, sir."
Kosmo bowed and smiled saying, "Hello Kreacher, I wasn't expecting to see you until Monday morning."
"Kreacher was over at Harry Potter's house for dinner, sir. Harry Potter told me you would be coming here, sir."
"It seemed only fitting to ask for Harry's approval of adding our logo to Dobby's grave."
"Did Kosmo tell Harry Potter that Dobby has been given the permanent position of Head President?" Kreacher ask.
"I did, he seemed most touched by it. I also told him that you had just been named as the Minister of Elven Affairs - to which Mr. Potter said he was most proud of you."
"Please sir, do not let Winky hear you boast too highly of me. My wife, sir, still struggles with our freedom."
"One day at a time, Kreacher, one day at a time." Komso and Kreacher bowed once more at the grave of Dobby - the elf who dared to dream of freedom and got it - for all elves.
