Teacher. Mentor. Friend.

Whether you grew up watching Boy Meets World, discovered it later in life, or know it's sequel Girl Meets World, chances are you have heard of or seen the amazing Mr. Feeny in action. He has been our teacher, our principal, our mentor, and our friend for over 25 years. He has taught us, guided us, and helped us grow; his only goal was to make us the best humans we could possibly be.

Sometimes, life lessons aren't easy to teach to someone. Child, adolescent, adult; it doesn't matter because nine times out of ten we don't listen the first time anyway. Not if you just tell us what is right, what is wrong, how to do things. We have to learn these lessons on our own and Mr. Feeny always knew that. He had a way of leading us to the lesson on our own, letting us get there and learn the way we need to. Through experience, pain, confusion; always there and always watching in case we needed someone in our corner. We never let him down as long as we lived up to our own expectations of ourselves, as long as we never gave up and never let life beat us. When we did, he was still there, bringing us back to who we are and making sure we never lost our sense of self.

"Unfortunately we live in a society where they tell us we have to look a certain way, so we're all under pressure to live up to unrealistic expectations."

It doesn't matter what other people think of us, expect of us, or want from us in life. What matters, as Mr. Feeny has taught us many times, is what we expect from ourselves. What we want from life, having the courage to go after it, and not letting life tell you no to your dreams. Never give up on your dreams, help where you can, and don't hold others to your expectations because they have their own to live up to. Follow your heart, trust your instincts, believe in yourself, and most importantly believe in other people. Give kindness, even when kindness isn't shown to you, and bring good into the world the best that you can.

"Well, now, you have passion. You have drive. You certainly have guts. I frankly can't wait to see what happens to you."

Mr. Feeny wants the absolute best out of life for us, and he can't wait to see the things we do. The people we become, the lessons we will teach our children, students, friends, and neighbors. He helped raise us and shape us in a way our parents couldn't. Not for a lack of trying on their part, but because he talked to us like we were adults, even when we were snot-nosed kids who thought things like school, rules, and grown-ups were stupid. When we wouldn't listen to anyone else, Mr. Feeny was there for us, making sure we still learned what was, and what wasn't, okay in life. How to be a true friend, how to grow as a person, how to bring joy and love to the world. He wanted us to know that the world was ours for the taking, and all we had to do was grab it. That is all that he wanted for us, all he dreamed for us, and why he put so much effort into each and every one of us.



Love and friendship are the most important things in life, and Mr. Feeny has never let us forget just how important that lesson is. He has held our hand through break-ups, parental divorces, and even death. He was always there to remind us that no matter what happens in life, as long as you have true friendships and experience love, you have lived a truly blessed life.

"Friendship, for example, is a real gift. It's given with no expectations and no gratitude is needed, not between real friends."

Friends, the best and most true even, fight and disagree. It is a part of life, but when you sit down and work through those problems because the other person means more to you than any disagreement or argument, that is when you know you have a real friendship with someone. Mr. Feeny taught us, time and time again, never to give up on your friends. Real friends, the ones you want in your life forever, don't want anything from you but your friendship. They don't need the fancy things you can buy, the status you bring them, or anything else besides your very presence in their life because that, and that alone, brings them the most joy possible. It is those friends, those who chose to be with you through even the darkest days of your life, that become family. Really, what is better than that, because who else do you want beside you?

“You don’t have to be blood to be family.”

He teaches us you are never too young or too old to find that special someone; nor is there only one special someone out there. Mr. Feeny's first wife died earlier in their lives together, and while he did eventually move on, he always wore her anniversary watch and loved her fully. His second marriage was just as sacred to him as his first, the love just as true. He taught us that, even though pain and death are inevitable in this life, it is still possible to find your happiness out there and to continue to live life to the fullest. He teaches us that, even if you are with someone for years, love has to be earned and can't exist without friendship and trust to build it on. That, even if you meet at 2 years old in a sandbox and know that is who you will spend the rest of your life with, love still takes work. That when people put our needs, wants, and desires above their own and do what is best for us no matter what, those are the people who truly love us.

"I believe that, when you find love, you hold onto it and cherish it because there is nothing finer and it may never come again. And that, my dears, is the most important thing I could teach you."

If you haven't discovered Boy Meets World, or the incredible Mr. Feeny, I hope that you will. You are never too old, never too jaded, and never too far gone for him to reach you. He will teach you the most wonderful lessons about life, love, and friendship. All you have to do is give him a chance. You will never forget him, and he will never forget you because...
