God Wars
Gielinor is the planet of which human residents refer to as "Runescape." Before we inhabited Gielinor, there was the epic and infamous series of battles and conflicts called The Gielinorian God Wars, which extended throughout the Third Age.Although the battles are of ancient history, Gielinor occupants, human and monster alike, will reap the consequences of The God Wars for many generations to come. Be this as it may, there happens to be a small group of creatures still seeking out the Godsword; an ancient artefact of the Third Age Wars.
The God Wars had many outcomes, good and bad, but is most famously known as the event that led up to the departures of many, if not most, gods
from Gielinor. Similar in astronomical misfortune, The God Wars caused the extinction of many races and nations of creatures in Gielinor.
The last event of the God Wars occurred when Zamorak finally had the Stone of Jas under his control. With its support, his powers were enhanced and he incinerated the entire continent of Forinthry. The destruction was so intense that the Anima Mundi, the life force of Gielinor itself, cried out in pain and awoke Guthix. Guthix created the Edicts of Guthix, which banished all the major gods from Gielinor and prevented them from returning...

Wars
Zaros had domination over Gielinor in the Second Age, but after being betrayed by Zamorak the second age had ended and many of the gods wanted domination over the earth. Please see the gods page in order to follow along.Saradomin says that Zamorak had returned from being banished and wanted to repossess the Stone of Jas, sometimes called the Fist of Guthix; an object that holds great power and is the source of magic for rune essence. After Zaros was banished, Zamorak gained Zaros's followers and destroyed his cities. This escalated the wars with the gods because they saw a chance to seize control over the remaining cities once controlled by Zaros. The God Wars ensued as Zamorak was unable to conquer and maintain his hold on the cities. Once the war became more intense, the gods of Gielinor could interact with the world, and otherworldly chaos gripped the very core of Gielinor.
In the wars for control, many species of creatures and entire cities were destroyed and made extinct by the sheer destruction of the power struggle. The cries of the balance of life, or Anima Mundi woke the ancient god Guthix from his sleep that had been going on since the First Age.
Guthix was so enraged by the destruction of the innocents that he banned the gods from Gielinor, although the gods continue to watch over their cities and lands.
The Third Age ended with the banishment of many gods, and thus, Guthix planted a sword in the Forinthry volcano inscribed with mysterious letters as to heed warning to the gods to not return.
Events
There are many major battles of The God Wars, for it took place over the beginning of the Third Age to approximately year 4,000 of the Third Age. This is a reason I cannot name all of the battles but if you want to know more, please inspect major conflicts. I will address significant battles that include massive destruction, death, and rebirth. The Zarosian Extermination was a battle to cover up the print Zaros left on Gielinor. Zamorak and Saradomin laid waste to Zaros's cities and built new cities on top of them. In this expedition, many of Zaros's followers were hunted down and killed to hush them up about their once powerful god.
The Fall of Hallowvale occurred after Zamorak returned from being banished. A highly powerful vampyre was granted permission to claim Hallowland as his own fortress for his aid in the uprising of Zamorak. After this, many werewolves, vampires, and undead creatures were released into the land and the once beautiful Hallowvale was reduced to an undead hellscape.
The Battle of Ullek happened following after the fall of Uzer. During the massive military action by Kreeyath and his impressive seige of Ullek, the city was easily overcome and the creatures who narrowly escaped with their lives live in Sophanem.
Maybe most significantly was the Battle of The Godsword which happened when Zamorak was beaten back into Forinthry. Saradomin killed Zarmorak with an aliance of Armadyl and Bandos. The aviansies delivered the blades of the Godsword while Zamorak heard of the creation of such a weapon, sent a task force of his followers to gain possession.
Defenses were set up within the Temple of Lost Ancients, aided by Saradomist and Bandosian reinforcements, and they were able to fend off the Zamorkians. However, the Godsword's power was too great and the war turned chaotic and each god was out for himself.
After Zamorak, purely by luck, gained control of the Stone of Jas, decimated Forinthry, creating what is now known as the Wilderness.
The explosion was what caused the cries of Anima Mundi, which then woke Guthix from his sleep, and lead to the banishment of the gods from Gielinor...
Outcomes
The God Wars still have a strong impact on Gielinor to this day. Areas that were earned in the God Wars still are ruled by the god who overcame the land during the Third Age. Lands such as Morytania and Feldip Hills still, and will always be, affected by the epic wars.Since the Edicts of Guthix were put in place, banning the gods from Gielinor, there have been battles still yet in the Fourth Age. The Fourth Age saw bloodshed and violence between religious factions and different races of creatures. The only thing keeping the Fourth Age from being an churning river of blood were the Edicts of Guthix.
The God Wars also made way for archaeology, a skill in which adventurers excavate sites in which major battles took place to uncover ancient artefacts. Since the God Wars took place 4000 years ago, few permanent structures remain, thus inducing the curiosity of heroes from each end of Gielinor to understand the history of the earth.
The God Wars represent a power struggle and the death and destruction of many innocent lives in vain. It remains the most solemn reminder of what can happen to beautiful lands of rich and diverse creatures when power gets into the hands of the bloodthirsty and powerful...
