The waters call me,
the waves lap at my tail,
but can I ever be free,
of the crime that was mine,
of the memory of that night....

:History:
Along the wilder beaches of Delphi's Bay, something stirred under a hedge of juniper and creeping vines. A single egg of cream and brown spots shuttered and wiggled in the nest it had been left in. The newly hatched serpenth never knew her mother, much less the male who was her father for a short breath of time. Neither was needed, the young snake was born knowing everything she needed to exist in the harsh world she was brought into. Her survival would depend on her own strength now. As she began to crack through the soft shell, she had already picked a name for herself.

Nivi.

Opalescence markings spread up and down brown skin, paper thin sails spreading open to catch the warmth of the sunlight as she took her first real breath. Nivi's first memories were of bright light, the sound and scent of salt-water and the soft movement of a thick brown egg beside her own. The small female didn't know why but she was drawn to it, whatever was inside was having difficulty getting out. Each glide of her long body brought her closer to it, elongated fins tapping at the hard egg shell.

The egg stopped moving for a moment, leading the female to circle it, studying it for a weak point. At some time, thin barbs slide free from the sail along her tail and she used them to tap harder on the shell's surface, creating a small hole at the top. Nivi's efforts were rewarded by a burst of flame that ignited the entire egg into ash, sending Nivi backward with a frightened cry.

What flopped out onto the sand was a small crimson serpenth with yellow fluff trickling over his neck and down his back. Wings as blonde as his mane lay wet across his back. All he could do was shiver in the waking world, so she did what went against everything her instincts told her. She stayed with him.

Brother. Resi.

As different as night and day, they were inseparable from that day on. She watched over him, becoming something serpenths were unfamiliar with. Family.

While he learned to use his wings, Nivi found love in the rivers that fed the great ocean near their nest sight. She feared the vastness of the oceans and Resi teased her about her unfounded fear but she took it good naturally. Many afternoons saw the two playing tag along the deep river-ways that snaked their way through the adjacent forests that led away from the sandy bay.

One day, she dropped a shell necklace over her brother's neck. The male had tipped his head, using one wing to lift the trinket into view.

"What is this sister?"

"So we never forget each other."

"You're - You're not leaving me are you?"

"No, I promise... I'll always be here to protect you."

And for a long time, they were content with their small world, that's what she believed. As the serpenths started to reach maturity however, things began to change. She found herself desiring the cool comforts of the rivers, the land was too dry, too hard on her smooth body. And her brother, her brother developed a darker desire.

It happened one dry evening. There had been a unusually long drought and the land had all but dried up. No matter how much Resi insisted that she retreat to the ocean, she shyed away from the dark deep waters, making use of what little water the rivers had to offer her. In the long days, she noticed that her brother had started to spend more time by himself. Sometimes his mane even danced in the wind as if it was alive.

"Sister, sister, come look!"

She remembered well the excitement in his voice as he beckoned her to his side. Resi was coiled near something, something that smelled of cinder and smoke. The water loving creature recoiled in fear at the sight of the sapling ignited in flames. What was worse was the wild light in her brother's eyes. Nivi used her long fins to dowse the small fire, the pride in the red serpenth's eyes turning to anger at her actions.

"Why did you do that?"

"Are you mad, you could have started a wildfire? Brother, it's ok, we'll fix this."

"Why can't you understand?" he hissed softly, "....I don't want to fix it."

"This isn't right, this is dangerous..."

But Resi had turned and taken wing before she could finish, leaving her to worry over her brother's behavior. Days apart became weeks, he still hadn't come home after their short heated argument. Was he still angry with her, even now? She waited several more days before she could take it no longer. She once again fought against her natural instincts and left the water that was steadily becoming her home. It didn't take too long for her to find herself some place that sent her body screaming...

The forest she'd come to was being devoured by flames, the yellow orange light jumping from twig to stump in a unsatisfied desire of hunger. And before it all, sat her brother watching the blaze grow out of his control. Nivi rolled back on her coils, her body shivering with the lack of water. No, this wasn't right.. what had happened to her little brother?

"Sister!" Resi greeted her warmly, flicking one golden eye in her direction, "Have you finally grown bold enough to come to see what I can do?"

He had changed without the female realizing it, his wings and mane flickers of the hellish light around them. Everything Nivi had ever known about her gentle brother seemed to vanish before her eyes.

"Stop this! This is wrong, you're killing everything!" Nivi cried out.

"That's right... I am..." he smiled, sending shivers down her spine. Amber eyes flickered, was there regret in that stone gaze, perhaps.

"Then.... I have no choice...."

She would have to end this... before he destroyed the entire coastline. Hidden barbs slide free of the female's tail as he looked on at his creation, but even as she struck him, her heart shattered as her brother screamed in pain. She'd missed her mark, blood dripping down his back from the shallow wounds. The look of betrayal on his face was enough to make her want to dive into the flames herself. Nivi rushed him again, determined to put a end to this madness but he was ready this time. He intercepted her in one swift move, the burnt-out clearing becoming a withering mass of bodies as he wrapped himself tightly around his sister. She cried out, her scales blistering as heat ate its way through. He released her after the female sank her teeth into one fiery wing. Her next attack swept through empty air, he'd retreated behind a wall of flames to keep her at bay.

"You promised, you promised to protect me!" he screamed, "I won't forget it, mark my words, I'll be back to finish this!"

In a golden comet of flames, he rose up above the trees, staggering in the air as he set the rest of the forest and the area around it ablaze. Nivi could only watch and weep as she scooped up the broken necklace left behind in the ash. He made sure to leave his sister with only one escape from the wildfire, the ocean becoming her only haven from his wrath.

The water sealed her sadness by washing her colors away, expressing what the female already felt. Grief. Nivi had failed and her brother was lost. She carried the forgotten necklace with her as a reminder as her scales became the same color as the ocean she now traveled.

Now... she has become the target. How long before Resi came to claim revenge on her....
