Nothingness was what he was used to. He was born into it and he thrived in it, or so he thought.

Unlike his introverted father, Alaric yearned to explore different places other than their quiet, monochromatic kingdom. Even though Purgatory was full of wandering souls, they tended to be eerily silent, mulling over their past lives rather than interact with their environment and the young prince, who quickly learned that attempting to communicate with them was rather futile. It was a rather dull existence, and although he did whatever duties he needed to do, Alaric wanted more, something different. He learned about Heaven and Hell when he was young, and although they were interesting enough, the location called Earth was what really caught his attention. He knew that most of the souls in and around Purgatory were human, with a few fallen angels and other various supernatural creatures into the mix, so learning where they were from was simply incredible. He became fascinated with the idea that creatures so simple as humans could end up in his kingdom, and he began to look into their past lives to see what they had done to make them end up there.

Needless to say, it wasn't as interesting as he imagined. However, something else captivated him.

Humans, he learned, lived in a world of color, life, and beauty. The fact that it wasn't as well taken care as Purgatory bothered him, but nonetheless, he wished to journey there. His desire grew as he did, and as a young adult, he looked for ways to escape Purgatory while his father was busy. It had been rather exhausting to find the way out, but his curiosity drove him until he finally found it. At the edge of Purgatory, hidden within a large mountain, was a sealed door created out of cool crystals that only the Rulers of Purgatory could open. Which a shaky hand, he opened the door to see...

Color.

Color was immediately the first thing he noticed. He knew about the names of each color due to the many years of peering in the human's lives, but truly seeing them for the first time was incredible. Brown trees full of bright green leaves. A sky, so blue with a gorgeous yellow-white sun that shone brilliantly. The water of a lake that was so crystal clear he almost wondered if it was truly there. He realized the door leads him to a place called a park of all things, with humans chattering and laughing about. The door, almost invisible, was connected to a tree, and he couldn't help but laugh in sheer happiness. No one could see it! No one knew of his secret!

So of course it was no surprise that when Alaric, the Prince of Purgatory, took his first step into this new and interesting world called Earth, he quickly realized that the oblivion he had existed in was nothing but a destitute prison. He never wanted to go back, instead, he wished to learn everything.
