Landscaping wasn’t always my passion, but you never would have guessed it while strolling through these gardens. Most people would be proud, but to me these flowering bushes and manicured hedges only represent the length and breadth of my failure. I’ve cultivated this establishment for thirteen years now. It's come a long way. Retrospectively I’ll tell myself ‘so have I’. But there will always be that fresh sprout of weeds creeping in. Without daily maintenance, weeds, like regrets, will suffocate any kindness you’ve grown to allow yourself. If you aren’t careful, they're happy to take over.

The camera sweeps upward toward the sky. Leaves scatter breezily across a tepid sunset.
-Intro music picks up. A montage begins.-

Young lady tumbling through a portal and picking herself up. Misplaced magic resulting in incredible frustration. Wayward wandering leads to making friends. Attending functions. Discovering new proficiencies. Accepting opportunities. Adopting some land. Tapping into this world's brand of magic. Narrowly avoiding destruction. She's a bit older now. Cultivating flowers on fertile ground. Developing recipes. Building a business selling teas. Expanding into a mountainside retreat. Seeking solace. A decade has passed. Never giving up, but becoming visibly weary.

-Music fades. Camera pans back down.-
It is night time. The tea shop in the foreground is locked up, but the softly glowing bathhouse beyond is open for business. Windows are open and the glittering scent of the rose garden hangs lazily in the air.

“Always a pleasure.” Said with a smile that doesn’t fully reach my eyes. It goes unnoticed as the guests turn with their room keys acquired, my services no longer needed. I snap the ledger closed for today and secure it inside the front desk before wishing Orum, my faithful manager, “Goodnight.”

While meandering down the hall I make absent mental notes to have the floors polished, or doors oiled. Reaching the stairs, I softly ascend. Pausing at the top to unlock the unassuming bookcase that doubles as a door. Beyond the door, my sanctuary. A modest room with a mediocre desk, otherwise filled with yet more books: these markedly more precious than those that stand sentry outside. Some stacked, others lining the walls. Smells like leather, paper, and misfortune.

The books here are dull in comparison to back home. I’m starting to forget their essence. Were they sweeter? More gritty? It was becoming harder to recall the comfortable heft of certain tomes containing uncertain magics tingling in hand. But the metallic taste of old conjuring symbols still lingers in the back of my throat. Even if their names escape me, the taste gives me hope that all may not be completely lost...

In three days time I’ll prepare another ritual. Maybe get lucky this time and finally draw the door that leads back home. I’ll never give up on getting back. No matter what I’ve built since. Whatever the cost.
