He walked up the old, rotten wooden stairs to his apartment. He winced and put a hand up to his ear; the whispers were back. The demons only spoke to him when he was alone, taunting and torturing him. He struggled to unlock the door, the voices piercing his ears. He slammed the door behind him, his heart racing from the panic growing inside him.
Ouija stumbled through the dark room until he found the bathroom. He quickly turned on the faucet and splashed cold water on his face. He lifted his head and looked into the dirty mirror, and in an instant, a grimacing shadow appeared where his own reflection would be. Ouija fell back and covered his eyes. He slowly stood back up and peered back into the mirror and exhaled a sigh of relief at the sight of his own reflection.
Ouija wiped the mixture of sweat and water from his face as he walked into the living area of his apartment. He clicked on a small desk lamp, illuminating a small corner of the room where he kept stacks of old occult books. Another shriek echoed in his head. He fell into an old chair that sat at the desk, holding his head and begging for it to stop. Like many nights before, in desperation for an answer, he grabbed a dusty book and began flipping through it.
He hadn't always been plagued by the demons; it happened in his adolescent years. They had started out as nightmares and progressively got worse to where he started seeing and hearing them everywhere. He sought out any information about demons or the occult he could find; he believed there had to be a way to rid himself of them. Not all of the demons were tortuous. Some of them spoke softly to him when he would lie down; their shadows kept him company during the longer nights.
A shadow flickered off in the distance. Ouija's eyes darted off to where it had been, but there was nothing there. He started to hear the whispers again, and then howling. The shadows in the room danced around, taunting him with their devious smiles. He held his head and rested his forehead on the desk.
"Stop it...stop it." Ouija pleaded in a whisper.
He lifted his head just slightly and glanced over to the shadows, who were now mocking him. He grabbed his book and threw it at the shadows. It hit the wall with a loud thud and fell to the floor. The demon shadows fell quiet and gazed back at Ouija with haunting, empty eyes. Then, all at once, they let out ear-piercing shrieks and shot across the room at Ouija.
Ouija screamed and put his arms up in front of his face. He fell back over his chair and hit the floor hard. His heart was pounding from fear. He slowly uncovered his eyes and looked up.
Nothing. There was nothing there.
