I'll tie back my hair, men's clothing I'll put on.
I'll pass for your comrade as we march along.
I'll pass for your comrade, no one will ever guess
Won't you let me come with you? Yes, my love, yes

When Rose, a woman, was discovered cross-dressing in order to follow her husband into the army, she's quickly imprisoned. Disillusioned, Rose secretly writes poetry in the final gift from her husband before he was killed in action: a small, leather-bound notebook. She serves her time reflecting on the loneliness of war, the grief of not knowing what really happened to her loved one, and the power of words.
----
Trembling, she carefully reached into the inner folds of her prison uniform's petticoat. She latched onto the precious notebook and pulled it out, retreating to the darkness in the back of her cell. Charcoal that she had been smothering in her hands for hours finally met the paper it was meant for. In the dim light, Rose's handwriting resembled chicken scrawl, an observation reminding her of the farm back home.

On the first page, she awkwardly wrote, "My name is Rose and I've been imprisoned for impersonating a soldier. These are my thoughts." The charcoal smudged over the paper and her hands, leaving a wretched-looking mess. But to Rose it hardly mattered. The only thing that mattered to her was that she had a place to put her words, a place to remind her that she was still real. "This is my poetry," she added, conviction coursing through her veins.
