the lost boy

The waves crashed against the old rotting planks. The sea was a particularly vicious beast that day; no less than the wind battering against the sails and making the ropes creak and strain. All would have been lost, but for Paw, a dashing young privateer, and his fearless crew. For this was not the first of their perils in life, nay it wouldn’t be their last one of the night either. After tying off the flailing ropes of loose sails, they began to plot a course for land. The billowing flames of the lighthouse were just barely visible through the mist and rain, but they were close. Storms catch everyone off guard, but this daring crew had planned ahead and everyone made it through alive. Though no one could’ve planned for what happened next..

Wood cracking under sudden impact sent a clear message to the sailors: they were about to be boarded. In the panic and haze of the storm, no one could see the pirate ship surging straight towards their starboard. Hooked planks came crashing down on the side rails as cannons on the bow fired volleys into the lower decks. Paw rallied his men to the deck, drawing his cutlass and staring down the onslaught of pirates like the fierce warrior he was. A few of them began charging over the planks, one at a time, before falling to a salvo of flintlock and blunderbuss pellets; the privateers had formed a firing line. Unable to reload in time for the next wave, they all drew their blades and stood fast.

Another burst of cannons ripped through their hull, knocking Paw and his crew off balance just as the pirates crossed once more. The raiders tore through their ranks as carnage erupted on the top deck. Paw parried the first strike against him, landing a firm kick right on his attacker’s chest which sent him toppling over the rail. With a determined glint in his eye, the heroic captain cut down pirate after pirate, barely suffering so much as a glance he went. Soon after they’d cleared their deck of enemies, and it was time to strike back. Paw pierced the sky with his blade and led the charge with a valiant battle cry. They struck down every pirate in their path, but Paw was getting brash. Skilled as he was, when he pushed in too far and felt a cutting blow on the back of his leg, there wasn’t much he could do. Three of the corsairs surrounded him and one plunged their sword straight towards his gut, but right at the last moment it was struck aside by his first mate, Peter. Paw's saviour ran one of the pirates through before quick-firing both of his flintlocks at the other two. He leant his hand down to his captain, pulling him-to with a knowing look in his eye. They both knew it was time to end this.

The two heroes narrowed in on the captain’s quarters, watching each other’s backs as they carved a path through. Upon reaching the door they both started kicking it down hard as they could. The wooden barricade cracked open under the force and behind it revealed the pirate captain himself.

He wore a red long coat with a matching feathered hat. Ruffled frills of cloth sprouted from his sleeves and a long black wig sat curly on his head. Despite all this, perhaps his most notable feature was the iron hook protruding from where his right hand should’ve been. Wielding a cutlass in his left hand, the man was twice as deadly as the average pirate, as Peter and Paw would soon find out.

Immediately they both charged in to strike, but the captain locked blades with Paw and caught Peter’s with his hook. Swiftly, he twisted his hook and disarmed Peter in one fell swoop. Paw attacked once more with a violent slash, but again the pirate parried him, before slashing down across Peter’s chest and then backhanding him with the hilt right on his temple. Peter was knocked unconscious as he was thrown aside against the wall. Paw grimaced at his opponent, crouching down to pick up his fallen comrade’s sword before blocking the inevitable counter-attack from the pirate. With two blades, the brave privateer found himself on even footing with the hook-clad warrior. Paw hacked, slashed and stabbed at the captain, but nothing could break his defence. He’d learnt, however, that sometimes the best time to strike is after your opponent does. So he waited, staring down the captain with that same determined look in his eyes. Together they paced the floor, eyes locked on each other in a silent battle.

Minutes passed before Paw finally put his plan into action: He sent an overhead strike to the pirate, pulling back at the last second to feign a hit out of him. As the captain went to parry, he instead found himself short of another hand as Paw cut upwards with his other blade. Enraged, he swung his hook all over like a maniac, barely missing at times. Seeing this as his chance, Paw struck straight down at his opponent with both swords at once, but this time he caught them both with his hook. Unable to hold up against both weapons at once, he stepped backwards and suffered a clean slash right across his cheek. As he buckled backwards, Paw doubled down and tackled him full force against the window behind. The pirate captain smashed straight through the stained glass and careened straight down, plunging into the depths of the cruel blue sea. Paw peered over the edge to see a volley of bubbles rising to the surface. The fight was over and all was silent, but for his panting, the rain, and the faintest of ticking in the water below.

"Paw, You're late for dinner!", the voice of one of the other boys echoed throughout the treehouse. Exhausted, he flopped down against his bedroom wall; letting go of his little wooden sword as his bucket-helmet drooped down and blocked his view. After taking a short moment to catch his breath, he took off his helmet and sprinted upstairs to the balcony. A lovely aroma filled the air as he sat down in front of an empty plate. “Looks delicious”, he grinned.
