At the time of Pearl's birth, King Arthur reigned over a prospering land of knights and damsels fair. The Roman Empire was locked in bitter conflict with their Persian neighbors. The rugged kingdom that would inspire the epic "Beowulf" was in its infancy.

The year was 504 A.D. Humanity lived in primitive clusters, thinking highly of themselves for their simple stone castles that would not withstand the might of a single blast from Mother Nature.

Pearl emerged from an abalone shell that had the rainbow-tinted hues of a soap bubble rising into the morning sky at sunrise. He was the first of a thousand Escent siblings to break free of his incubating prison and taste the salty-sweet draught of ocean water.

Those early days of life were a glorious blur of chasing his fellow Escents to the very edge of seaside cliffs and having long conversations with the many creatures that dwelled beneath the waves, from the simple chatter of the lobster to the philosophical debates of whales. An Escent has no fear of predators. Their skin, their blood, even the marrow of their bones is filled with a magical liquid that both gives them the ability to move through water of any depth as easily as they trot the rocky trails of their home caves and makes them taste absolutely horrible to any living creature. (Imagine drinking a bottle of dish detergent and you'll get a pretty good idea why sharks leave Escents alone.)

Escents are the next best thing to immortal. They will live forever unless they are gravely wounded.

The very first Escent to lose her life to humans was a mare named Peach. She delighted in playing in the shallow waves near the human huts despite her mother's many warnings that she must never attract the notice of land creatures. She laughed at her mother's concerns. How could those slow, simple apes walking on their hind legs ever hope to catch a majestic swimmer of significant talent?

The fishermen cast their nets, grunting and growling when Pearl drifted right between the diamond gaps in the ropes.

The next net had steel woven in the strands. Peach only had time for one pained gasp. Thick, clear liquid filled the water, temporarily trapping the simple wooden boat as its owners tried frantically to row away. Two of the largest Escents in the water capsized the boat, sobbing as they dragged the panicked humans beneath the waves. Theirs was a gentle nature but these land dwellers could not be allowed to return to their village and report on what they'd seen. The Escents had heard many horrible stories of what was done to their distant cousins, the unicorns.

The many Escent clans met to discuss this tragedy. Their decision to move to uncharted dwellings was mutual. For centuries, the only human to lay eyes on an Escent was the occasional drunk sailor (or pirate) set adrift through misfortune. The creatures of beauty and light were falsely reported as mermaids or dismissed as hallucinations brought on by drinking sea water.

Time dulls memories, even for those that can live a few thousand years.

Pearl watched in horror as a group of youngsters shot to the surface to see what all the fuss was about when the roof of the undersea world started to rock day and night. The sight of a human battleship on its way to the ocean floor was a daily occurrence but the ongoing battles were filled with noise and light that could only be diffused so much by the water.

The youngsters were slaughtered amid the confusion of blasting guns and detonating sea mines. Reports came in all over the world from the Escent clans far and near. Humanity's losses during World War II were nothing next to the destruction wrought on the Escents, despite the fact that this was not their war. Nearly half the world population of Escents was gone, their crystal voices never again to be heard singing the moon into the sky.

Pearl and his mate mourned the loss of a whole batch of shell-eggs. They knew whole family lines that had been wiped out entirely. Their hopes that humans would lose interest in the oceans and be satisfied with their land masses grew dimmer by the day.

Next came human divers intent on robbing the ocean floor of seashells and colorful fish to fill the tanks in their homes and offices. Unwitting humans would disturb whole nests of Escent eggs, oblivious to the true value of the treasures they plucked. Baby Escents turned to dust within minutes of leaving the tide pools. Clans that had once relied on the coral reefs as a primary food source feared to venture out, choosing a very slow death by starvation rather than risking the notice of a human and bringing destruction on their whole set of living caves.

There were only about a hundred Escents left in the world when nuclear testing began. Healthy Escents that swam into the wrong patch of ocean would drink the radiation fallout without ever realizing they had been poisoned. Their manes would fall away, their skin would turn a sickly gray and their eyes would go dull.

Pearl and his mate resisted the sickness longer than any of their fellow Escents. Even so, she had lost too many of her own children to take an interest in the beautiful places that had once put luster in her mane and bounce in her steps. They huddled together in the most remote seaside cave they could find, taking warmth and comfort from the gentle pressure of one warm flank pressing up against another.

The ominous rumble from above was an undersea drill exploring for oil. Pearl tried to nudge his mate to her feet but she fell back to the ground, whispering for him to leave. He screamed a challenge at the monster that was creeping ever closer to their hiding place. A shudder passed over him when his mate galloped out of life to be with her children again.

A light flooded the chamber from behind. Something - a tickle in his mind, a half-heard voice - was calling him to make his escape. With a final angry snort of protest, he followed the summons though it tore his heart in half to leave the body of his mate behind.

His invisible guide forced him to follow a winding trail that avoided the many pockets of pollution created by people. He came at last to the largest cave he had ever seen. The opening looked like the mouth of some predator half the size of the world. He was beyond the point of caring about his safety. He strode into the submerged tunnel without fear.

He came at last to a chamber so deep, not even man's ingenuity will ever pierce it. There he found mythical creatures of every type and size, creatures of air, earth and water. All had been reduced to the realm of story through destructive human activity. All were the last of their kind.

At their midst was an enormous dragon whose scales were every color of the rainbow. She has lived at the center of the earth since the dawn of time though even she is unsure how she came to be there. She is the keeper of all knowledge, even those tidbits that never make it past the point of casual thought.

She welcomes Pearl as one would a beloved child. In her eyes he can see the joy of the past, peace in the present and hope for the future. He can see the massive rainbow light that will engulf the world at the time of its rebirth, creating a bridge to the sky which will reunite him with his dear mate and the many friends he has lost.
