Mountains can sing.

It’s a little-known fact that always escapes city-dwellers. They tramp up the pristine passes of a mountain’s shoulder to brag about their bravado in facing a week without a real bed or hot shower. Their less intrepid friends are left to wonder at how they could bear the thought of being woken by the howling of wolves or devoured right in their sleeping bags. Mr. Puma will have a #2 Human Burrito Combo with extra guacamole.

Real mountain people know that every pebble can tell a story and that even the tiniest patch of lichen growing in a crack is a rugged survivor with more endurance than the most virulent of garden weeds. They are also aware that while life on the mountain can be lonely at times, they are never truly alone.

Call them spirits of the mountains or the guardians of the peaks. Call them what you will, for they will never contradict you. They are no more substantial than air yet they have life just as surely as the mouse whose heart pounds when the shadow of the hawk falls upon him. Each spirit chooses the shape of an animal when the peak they claim first rises from the earth. There is Emerald Bear whose peak is shaggy with evergreens and Leaping Otter whose rocky shoulder conceals a majestic waterfall.

The highest peak in this wondrous range is prowled by Silver Lion. Her magnificent white coat is striped with silver and her mane is the rich red hue of the halo made by the sun as it crests her peak. She is also known as Pureflower for when she places a paw on the ground clusters of white flowers spring up, each petal marked with two silver stripes that meet to form a heart.

The mountain folk say there is no greater honor than to see Silver Lion just before you die, for that is a sign of a life well lived.
