Madeline is a very sick girl. Diagnosed with a rare disease that completely eradicated her immune system, Madeline is confined to a 12x12 room for the rest of what is sure to be a very short life. Madeline is like any other five-year-old. She wants to go outside and play, go on imaginary adventures, and host sleepovers, but she can't. Her disease won't allow it. Her father Sean—a single man struggling to hold down two jobs just to pay the medical bills—hated seeing the look on his daughter's face as she watched the other children play outside her window. Just when he was about to go out of his mind with grief, Sean came across an article in the news paper about a young man named Jules Yun and his plans to carry on his father's legacy of inventing. This article gave Sean an idea.
The next day, Sean paid the young inventor a visit. "How can I help you?" Jules asked.
"It's about my daughter, Madeline," Sean started. "She's real sick. So sick she can't even go outside... and she's so lonely. This is her," he said as he pulled a photo from his pocket and handed it to the doctor. "I know you make machines, like your father used to. Do you... do you think you could make her a pet? A-a friend?"
"I know it's an awful lot to ask, but you see she hasn't got much time left, and I just..." He sighed then. "I just want her to be able to say she has a friend. Just one friend... Please."
Jules pursed his lips as he stared down at the photo of the little girl. Her face conveyed deep sadness, but even still her smile was bright. He couldn't possibly say no. "Come back in three days. I should be done by then." As soon as Sean left, the inventor went to work. For three days Jules worked late into the night and woke up early the next day. And Sean was at his doorstep not even five minutes after the last bolt was hammered. "Just in time," he said.
Sean picked up the machine and looked it over. "Perfect."
"Might I accompany you?" Jules asked. "I'll need to show you how to operate it."
"Of course. Come on." Sean lead the way with the inventor right on his heels. When he got home, they headed straight for Madeline's room. "I have a surprise for you," he said before sitting the creature down.
"What is it?" the little girl asked quizzically before getting out of bed to examine the thing.
Jules stepped forward. "His name is Huereux. He's a pet. He's a companion, a friend. All you have to do is turn the key. Here." He handed Madeline a key made of his father's special ore.
The little girl turned the key, and suddenly she had a friend. Huereux's eyes lit up as he came to life and began to play with his new master, and laughter filled the room as he showered her with affection.
Sean turned to Jules with tears in his eyes. "Thank you. Thank you so much." He reached for his wallet. "I'm afraid I don't have very much money, but—"
Jules put his hands up. "No need. This one's on me." Seeing the little girl's smile was its own reward.
