He loved her. He loved her for hour years, ever since the day she found him wandering outside her house. The little Kumos puppy was no more than six weeks old, but he was already alone and heartbroken.

Zinaida's mother died giving birth to him, which meant that the young pup learned early on how to fight and fend for himself. He was used to being alone, depending on no one, making his own way. Until she showed up.

Antoinette was fourteen at the time, still a young and naive girl who believed in angels and miracles and everything good. She was going outside to play in the woods when she stumbled across a little white bundle in the bushes. She went over to investigate, and bundle revealed itself to be a tiny Kumos puppy with bright, piercing powder blue eyes. He backed away at first, still wary of humans, but Antoinette was patient. She sat down and waited for the puppy to come to her, and eventually, he did.

As soon as the pup climbed into her arms, he and Antoinette were inseparable. She named him Zinaida never let him out of her sight for four years. Everywhere she went, he followed. Zinaida was her best and only friend, and the two loved each other more than anything.

-----

The day started out like any other. Antoinette, her parents, and Zinaida took a trip from Veta Lake, where they lived, to the Artic Frost. Antoinette had decided that she wanted to go sledding, which meant that Zinaida was going sledding, too.

Everything should have been fine. Antoinette listened carefully to the instructor as he explained how to steer the sled as well as giving careful safety instructions. There was no reason to believe that this would be anything but a fun excursion.

They were off to a great start. Antoinette was sledding and having a great time, and Zinaida was following beside her on foot. Everyone was having fun as Antoinette climbed back up for her fifth trip down.

Antoinette made her descent, and everything was fine. Until it wasn't, Antoinette lost control of her sled and crashed into a tree. A horrified Zinaida rushed to her side, but it was already too late. Antoinette's body was mangled and broken, and Zinaida could smell the life leaving her. He stayed with her until the end, until she closed her eyes and opened them no more.

Zinaida couldn't stay there anymore. He couldn't be so close to the hollow shell that was once his master, knowing that she would never pet him or play with him again. Before he knew it, he was running, his paws carrying him far away and into the wilderness.

Zinaida wandered for days, almost until he couldn't move anymore. And then he heard it. A laugh, almost as light and jovial as Antoinette's. But it couldn't be. She was dead, taken from him far too soon. He approached the edge of the forest to investigate, and that's when he saw her. A beautiful young girl who couldn't have been any older than Antoinette when she died.

A sudden rage and jealousy consumed Zinaida then, boiling up from his paws, through his body and behind his eyes. Why should this girl get to live, to laugh and play and have fun, when Antoinette couldn't? It wasn't fair. Zinaida lunged at the girl then, pinning her down and tearing through her flesh easily. He saw the light leave her eyes, and this gave Zinaida a perverse satisfaction. He had tasted blood, and he liked it. In fact, he liked it so much that he wanted more. And so he set off to find it.

Zinaida went on a killing spree, murdering any girl who reminded him in any way of Antoinette. Killing was his only comfort now. Zinaida found solace in taking lives, in murdering young girls. Until he saw her.

She looked just like Antoinette, with her bright red hair and chocolate brown eyes. She even had the same smile and laugh as Antoinette. But it wasn't her. The now-familiar rage settled in Zinaida's stomach, and he pounced on the girl, holding her down, ready to strike. And that's when he heard her. 'Zinaida, stop! Don't do this. Just because I'm gone doesn't mean that she shouldn't get to live.'

Zinaida growled then, holding her down, deliberating...
