Saraquel, is pictured in legend as having gigantic proportions: one foot rests in either the fourth or the seventh heaven, while the other is on the bridge between hell and paradise. He may be angel in the book of revelation that has one foot on the land and one on the sea, holding back the winds of death until the proper time.

According to legend Saraquel keeps a roll of humanity, on which the names of the damned are circled in black and the names of the blessed, in white light. When a person's day of death approaches, a leaf with the person's name on it falls from the tree beneath God's throne. After forty days have passed, Saraquel must sever the individual's soul from his or her body. He is reputed to be angel who accompanies souls to Heaven or Hell after death. The phrase 'the Wings of Azrael' (Saraquel) refers to the approach of death; the signs of death coming on the dying.

Beginning | Middle

He looked over the scene laid out before him: Heaven. Full of Roman style buildings and surrounded by rolling hills, he was in the main city; a city known for its perfection and beauty in even Hell. Beyond? A forest full of nearly any creature you could think of and yet they lived in peace. Heaven may seem like a fantastic place - after all, it was meant to - however, what about beyond the forest where very few people ever bothered to trek out to? Since the beginning of the war, what was once a large field became a camp of hastily built shacks for the new angelic army; lush grass trampled into muddy puddles by thousands of feet travelling over it on a regular basis. The camp was something new to all angels for the bad condition of the grass if nothing else. He shook his head; slight enough that you would have had to be staring at him intently to see. Heaven wasn't meant to be a place of war and he didn't plan on it staying as one for much longer - the camps had to go and the only way for that to happen was for the war to end.

And the only way to end the war is to make sure this peace talk goes well, he thought; both excited at the thought of uniting the three species and scared at the reactions they may have to his plans. What he was thinking was long term and could cause the demons to back out of the peace talks if the humans didn't first. That was an odd thought in itself though; you would expect the humans to be the first to want an alliance with the angels. However, the temporary alliance that had already been formed between angels and demons to squash the rebellions and wars taking place throughout earth had changed that and the demons were now the angels' best chance at peace. He went to run a hand through his already naturally messy hair before forcing himself to stop. Doing anything like that would make him seem nervous and unsure as well as causing a vibe he didn't want to give before those in the room even got to hear the plans. He had to remember he had been promoted to an archangel so he needed to show strength.

He turned to face the room and smiled slightly. "To begin with," he said; making sure he was audible but not deafening, "My name is Saraquel and, as I'm sure you know, I'm attempting to create an end to the long war that, to many of you, may be the only thing you've ever known." He took a few steps away from the window; unconsciously causing the appearance of him glowing slightly from the sun shining through the large window behind him. Looking around the table, he saw ten of each of the three species. That meant everyone had decided to go then which was a good start. Noticing that, Saraquel continued with a little more enthusiasm for what he was saying than used before. "I'm sure none of you are keen on this war in the slightest but I think that, between us, we can stop it. Sure there are only thirty-one people in this room but there are far more than just us who I know agree with the idea of peace. In fact, I know very few people who don't want the war to end." He continued to explain his ideas and was glad to see nods of agreement coming from all around the room.

After a long talk on how to go about ending the war, Saraquel watched the rest of the people in the room leave before turning to look out of the window again. In less than twenty-four hours, things should return to normal and he would no longer need to watch the bodies of dead or injured angels being carried back to Heaven. While the plans to end the war were already being carried out after the meeting, however, there was still much left to discuss. If the next meeting didn't go well, then another war would come about in a matter of years and it would be impossible to end it through a simple peace talk as they had this time around: angels and demons would be locked in a constant battle and humans would be destroyed entirely.

---

The war had finally ended. Saraquel smiled softly as he watched the returning angels through his office window. The meeting that would begin the discussion on a long-term peace between the species was to start in an hour and Saraquel had to get ready to lead it. He had heard that one of the fallen angels representing the demons, Machlon, was going to attempt to prevent any treaty under the orders of one of the three Generals who controlled Hell. He knew his close relationship with the general would cause the other demons to also re-think any form of peace and meant that he needed to work hard to get them to even consider a treaty.

Hours of talking later, a treaty had finally been decided but it was far from what he had hoped for. Machlon, and then the other demons, had argued to make it conditional. And there were a lot of conditions. The treaty would be broken if angels went to Hell or demons went to Heaven, if humans attempted to kill either species, if any angel killed a demon or demon killed an angel (though demons classed killing humans as okay seen as they are mortal) and so on. It meant that it would be very easy to break the treaty and that the demons could do it if they wished to start a war again. Unless any of that happened, however, all species would agree to get on however Saraquel couldn't help but think that it would be no different without the treaty seen as a single death could cause an outbreak of war either way.
