Life Excerpt

The bag felt heavy. It felt like the shoulder strap was digging into his shoulder. He knew very well that it wasn't. It was just his nerves playing tricks on him. He was, after all, about to tutor someone for the first time. It wasn't officially tutoring, but that's what he considered it being. When Ando had first approached him after class two days ago he'd been shocked. And tempted to say no. It had felt a little suspicious when one of the more popular guys at the college had asked him for help with history. He didn't really know why he'd said yes in the end.
He stopped by the front door of the address he'd been given. This was it. Time to see if it was all a prank or not. He took a deep breath before ringing the door bell. A moment later the door opened and there was Ando. Looking happy and relieved to see him.
-"Shiloh! Hi. Come on in." As Shiloh was taking his jacket off Ando continued. "I was starting to think you weren't coming. That you'd changed your mind or something." Shiloh looked a bit confused.
-"Really? What time is it?"
-"Like, ten past five."
-"Ten minutes? That's late to you?"
-"Well, normally no." Ando got a sheepish look on his face. "I guess I just figured that you're the kinda person that's always exactly on time." Shiloh smiled.
-"Well, I probably would've been had the bus not been late." Ando gave him a beaming smile.
-"So I was right then?"
-"I guess so." Shiloh was straining his ears to hear if there was anyone else there. The uncertainty must have been obvious on his face because Ando approached him with concern written clearly on his.
-"Are you okay?" Shiloh could feel the heat rise to his face.
-"Um, yeah. Guess I'm just surprised none of your friends are around." Once again that sheepish grin was playing on Ando's lips. He completed the look by putting both hands behind his head. Shiloh couldn't help but notice how cute it made him look. Shaking his head slightly to get the thought out of his mind he looked up again just as Ando replied.
-"They usually would be but I...um...didn't really wanna advertise the fact that I need this kinda help..." Making an expression that made it clear he'd just realized something he quickly added. "Not that I'm ashamed to be with you or anything. 'Cause I'm not!" Shiloh smiled and chuckled a little. That seemed to make Ando go back to his old self again. And that beaming smile was back too. "I'm making a fool of myself, aren't I?"
-"It's okay. I think I needed that."

Ando showed Shiloh to where they would be working. In the hopes of keeping the tutoring further under wraps the activity was to take place in Ando's room. Ando sat at the desk while Shiloh was offered to sit on the bed. After some initial hesitation he accepted the offer and sat down. He soon had himself surrounded by books in the bed. All of them opened up to a relevant section for Ando's current need. Apparently he was especially afraid of failing his mid-term.

After almost three hours Ando stretched.
-"Okay, I don't think my brain can take any more of that tonight." Shiloh looked at the clock and raised his eyebrows.
-"Oh my. I had no idea it was this late..."
-"Huh?" Ando swiveled around on the chair and checked the time. "Oh..." A worried look spread across his features.
-"What's wrong?"
-"Nothing. It's just...I'm pretty sure the others are back by now..." All of a sudden the worried look was replaced by his ordinary, care-free visage again. "You know what? Screw it! I'll just hope we don't bump into anyone as you're leaving."

Walking downstairs they didn't meet anyone but as they were walking the last few feet towards the door someone appeared in an adjacent doorway.
-"What's going on here? You having a friend over, Ando?" It was one of Ando's pals, a jock. He was known to be a jerk and right now he was snickering at his own veiled joke.
In a swift and completely natural manner Ando put his arm around Shiloh's waist as he turned towards the other guy.
-"Yeah, he's my friend and we've been enjoying ourselves for the last three hours. Got a problem with that?" The guy had obviously not been expecting that kind of response because the shock was written clearly on his face. Shiloh was a bit sympathetic though because it was taking a lot of his concentration to not gape at Ando like that guy was doing right now. Turning back towards the door Ando led Shiloh outside, grabbing his jacket on the way. Once the door was closed Ando leaned against it and started chuckling.
-"Wow, did you see his face?" He dried a tear from his eye. "That was pricel..." He stopped as he saw Shiloh's face. It was quite pale and he looked terrified. Ando went up to him and put a hand on his cheek. The touch made Shiloh flinch. "Are you okay?" Shiloh looked at him with total disbelief and shook his head slowly.
-"Am I okay? Really, you're going to ask me that after just having outed me to one of your friends? A friend who I'm sure has quite the loose tongue too..." Ando blinked at him. Shiloh wasn't sure but he thought he saw pain in his eyes for a brief moment. Then the smile was back. "What are you smiling about now?" Ando gave him a mischievous smile.
-"Oh, you'll see." Then he turned more serious. "And don't worry about him. I'll make sure he keeps his mouth shut." Winking at Shiloh he added. "Your secret is safe with me." Shiloh could feel the heat reaching his face again and knew that he must be blushing. Ando gave him another one of his beaming smiles and Shiloh found it impossible to stay mad at him.

Days turned into weeks and before long the day of the mid-term came. Having finished his own already Shiloh was waiting outside for Ando to do the same. Towards the end of the allotted time Ando exited the building. Shiloh hurried over to him.
-"Well?" He could barely contain his own excitement.
-"Well, what?" Ando however was unusually somber.
-"How did it go?"
-"Oh, the test?"
-"Yes, the test! What else?"
-"Well..." A smile started playing on his lips. "I think I aced it!" The beaming smile was back as they hugged.
-"Oh my God, I'm so happy for you!"

Two weeks later they got their results back. The two of them were right next to each other and having just looked at his own Shiloh turned to Ando expectantly.
-"Well? Was it good?" Ando seemed shocked. Worry started to grow in Shiloh's mind. "Is...is it bad?" He whispered. Ando handed him the piece of paper. He looked at it and then as he looked at Ando again his friend was now smiling. "You really did ace it." Ando nodded.
-"I need to show mom!"

That evening Shiloh found himself sitting next to Ando on a bench on Ando's parents porch. Ando took a deep breath.
-"You know, there's something I've been dying to do for a while now." Shiloh looked at him.
-"Yeah? And what would that be?" As Ando looked at him there was something in those eyes he'd never seen before.
-"This." Ando leaned towards him and before he knew what was happening Ando's lips were crashing against his.
