Snappers the Hermit Crab

When I was little I used to own a hermit crab. I remember how I got him, I saved him from getting eaten by a water filter. The man told me that if I cared enough to save him, I'd care enough to love him too. I often thought about what kind of story the crab might have had to have gotten to that point in his life where I saved him.

A young girl entered the exotic fish store with her father. Her dad owned 2 salt water fish tanks and came to the store frequently to buy new fish. This had been the first time his daughter came with him. Living in Florida she wasn't new to the wonders within the water, but she'd never seen so many different types of fish in one place. She stopped over a tank with clown fish in them. At the time they'd been her favourite. She looked over them and straight through the glass. Being young as she was she didn't know not to stick her hands in the tank. As she moved her hand toward the water, her dad called for her to stop.

Gasping she moved back. The shock had caused her to fidget so much a button from her shirt came loose and fell into the tank. She ran toward the tank to try and get it, but it'd already hit the bottom of the tank. She started to tear up before she noticed a small hermit crab dash for the button. By this time it'd already fallen and been covered by sand. The crab grabbed onto it with one claw and started to push itself to the top of the tank.

Before she could react the current from the water filter picked him up and lifted him past several tanks. He grabbed the button with both claws and tried to swim across the current. Slowly he was pulled toward the filter. The girl began to panic but knew she wasn't allowed to touch the water again. She watched hopelessly as the crab drifted to the filter. She did the only thing she knew would help and she screamed at the top of her lungs and pretended to cry.

This quickly grabbed the attention of her father and the shop keep. She noticed there wasn't enough time to explain to them so she forced her hands into the tank and grabbed the crab. Her dad became angry with her for disobeying him and before he could speak she turned around with her hands cupped closed.

"Whatever it is drop it!"

She shook her head profusely and as her dad walked closer she slide down to the ground. She opened her hands and her eyes swelled up with tears. The small crab moved out of a ducking position and straightened up holding the button in his claw. Her dad and the shop keep both relieved commended the girl on her recovery mission. After she explain her story to the shop keeper, he told her that when they found the crab in the wild, he actually had a button in his claw. He told her that since she had saved the little guys life that she could take him home with her free of charge.

When she returned home, she dropped him in the tank. It'd been the first thing in her dads salt water tank that belonged to her. He lived for many years and every time he slept, he used the button as a pillow.
