Candlelight danced upon the wall as Sorciere gathered her bag, filled with the tools of her trade. She had important business to attend to tonight, and she was determined not to put it off any longer. Sorciere took a last look around her room and said a quick prayer to her ancestors for strength. Moving quickly, she closed the door and headed into the night. The air was hot and sticky with humidity that pressed down on the New Orleans night with a certain sense of dread. Quickly, she made her way through the streets until she came upon the wrought iron fence that surrounded the cemetery. Sorciere didn't have to guess whom she would find inside, but quickly headed towards her great grand-mere's tomb. Her best friend, Venitia, was sitting on the ground with a row of candles flickering in the breeze.

"Bonnesoir, ma chere." Sorciere greeted Venitia with a kiss and hug. She immediately noticed her friend wince at the contact, and on closer inspection saw the bruising streaking Venitia's face. "Tell me you are finally tired of him!" Sorciere demanded. "I won't stand by to watch him end up killing you!" Venitia looked into her friend's eyes and started to cry softly. "He threw me down the stairs last night because he wasn't happy with how the dinner party went. I had the staff all in line and eveything set to his percise instructions, but Monsiour Comeaux refused the business deal Antoine purposed. He was livid!" Venitia turned away and studied the inscription on the tomb. Softly, she whispered, "It literally went downhill after the guests went home."

Sorciere felt rage boiling, thumping in her blood. She walked in front of Venitia and with vengeance in her voice said, "Are you done with him, bebe? Truly? I will help you, but only if you are sure that you never want him to lay a hand on you again!" Venitia started to nod and said, "Yes. I once held a great love for Antoine in my heart, but in just a few short years, he's beaten it out of me." Taking a deep breath, Sorciere said, "Go home, but avoid him at all costs. Take this-" she pulled a jar of red brick dust out of her bag and handed it to her. "Sprinkle this around the window sills and along the door jambs of any room you are going to be in. He can't cross over it, if he means you harm. Are his plans to travel to Houma still on for tomorrow morning?" Venitia nodded, her eyes never straying from Sorciere's. "Bien. Now go, it will all be taken care of." The friends parted ways, Venitia towards home, and Sorciere towards the port to charter a way to the bayou.

Three days later, Sorciere returned home and walked straight to the alter in the corner of her room. Kneeling, she lit the candles and promptly started a prayer of thankfulness. Feeling better, she stood, shedding her clothes and promptly climbed into bed and into a restoring sleep.

Time passed on, and she filled her time with the many people seeking love charms, and talismans of protection. Her guidance was much sought out all over New Orleans, and Sorciere enjoyed helping all of the people. Then, the day finally came when the papers published death notices and articles about the tragic disappearance of a wealthy local businessman and the beautiful wife he left behind. Sorciere composed herself, dressed, and headed towards Venitia's home. Once she reached her friend's home, a servant allowed her entrance. She found Venitia in the sitting room surrounded by people cloaked in black clothes of mourning. Sorciere hugged her friend tightly and murmured in her ear, "Grand-mere let me know that she will watch over him, bebe. Everything will be alright now."

The French word sorciere, female sorcerer, derives from the Vulgar Latin sortarius properly "teller of spells,
and classical Latin 'go out, out', first designating a method of divination and destiny, fate.
