With a lopsided grin and a small chuckle, Aran once described herself as "painfully average" - which is a statement that checks out, should one be motivated to overanalyze the first two decades of her life. Throughout her public school journey, her grades were just enough to keep her afloat, and her love of all things soccer-related didn't help her score for the high school team. Though she was always the life of the party, the acquaintances she made under strobe lights and under the influence never graduated into real friends; if anything, the only things anyone remembered her for was her beer pong prowess, and her ability to pick up a new girlfriend every month. Sure, she had charm, but if she had any true talent lurking deep within, she certainly never attempted to apply it to anything she did.

Oh, but if only life had remained so simple. She could have continued to be complicit in her own mediocrity.

When the armageddon tore her sophomoric life apart, she suddenly came face-to-face with existential questions she had always tried to avoid. What had she accomplished so far? Was she going to die without making a single, lasting mark on the world? What did she even want to do with whatever time she had left? As she traversed the now post-apocalyptic wasteland with a friend, a backpack and a knife, she began to think, more and more and more, until there were no other realizations left to have: her life was a filler episode that nobody really enjoyed, including herself. And she would probably die a meaningless death, in a world where there was no one left behind to mourn.

Fate tends to reward those with good hearts, however, and amidst total devastation, Aran perseveres. Having now seen the worst of humanity, she strives to be levelheaded and kind, and her optimism and selflessness shine more brightly than they did before. She's developed a gentle, comforting presence, and she's not afraid to give a tight embrace to someone who desperately needs it. She brings people together and unashamedly lifts their spirits, and yet... she does not understand how much her smile would be missed, if something were to happen.

Trauma and eye-opening experiences separate the old Aran from the new, but she continues to dwell upon the past. She laughs off praise, perhaps because she's not used to it.

Without realizing it, she's grown into the protagonist of her own story. And, one day, she will learn that even the most painfully average person can make a difference, too.
