Had a story idea. Entirely forgot what it was. Whoops. All I remember is it's alien related.
Something about some sort of alien planet with a very strict hierarchy. Subordinate is pretty much the lowest of the low but wants to advance through the ranks and is willing to turn against others to get on the king's side. Ends up being both loyal and close to him as a trusted adviser.
Maybe do it as a sort of diary thing from his point of view up until the main story to get through a lot of points quickly.
Pfft, plot to this? Who needs plot?

Those who are in charge are such unconditionally. It's pretty much impossible to disobey someone above you. Sort of 1984ish though not at all. Even if someone wanted to disobey, their body naturally stops them. Advancement on the planet is possible but almost unheard of. Enter this guy. Hates being treated like crap by those above him. Works for a lot of different people, progressively higher ranking, and backstabs all of them but is never caught. Causes a lot of them to 'fall from grace' in an attempt to step up into their position. Fails for the most part but does slowly advance. Manages to set it up so it looks like he warns them about problems and tries to stop them, and also gives them advice they ignore, while he is really the mastermind behind everything. King hears about him and suspects nothing because of how the system works and how people don't even consider doing something wrong. King trusts him and thinks he has some sort of ability to see the future so hires him. Ends up in a much higher position because of it and is just below the lords, meaning his standing has increased tenfold. Dude plans on trying to kill the king and take his place. Decides he actually likes the king. Works loyally for him. Something something. Fuck knows.

Humans, as a whole, thrive off of free will - the idea that they can do anything they want within reason. Children are always asked what they want to be when they're older and everyone has the opportunity to try to develop their skills in that area, whether it's as an actor or a doctor.
However, that way of living doesn't always apply to other species. In the same way that an alpha wolf will remain an alpha and an omega will remain an omega, or even that a human born into a well off family will likely never end up working in a supermarket, there are creatures in the universe for whom the idea of changing how they live from birth to death is never considered.
