Umpteen raised her head from behind the game master screen.
“What?” she said.
Umpteen was an angel urubu who would host Mazes and Mahars sessions at a local game store every two weeks. She had been playing for almost two years and had started acting as maze master, the Subeta version of dungeon master, for five months.
Currently, the group that Umpteen was the DM (dungeon master) for was on a journey to find an artifact connected to the moon goddess in order to save the world from being lost in darkness forever. This quest had been momentarily interrupted by two enemies: a pumpkin who could see into the future to predict opponents’ moves and a pink taffy lizard with elasticity powers. Two of the party members had previously tried and failed to hit the pumpkin due to the pumpkin’s aforementioned ability to see into the future.
Now another party member, a graveyard bumbus, had gotten the idea to cast a darkness spell on the pumpkin seer. The bumbus had a mischievous grin on her face, confident that her plan would succeed. Umpteen took a short glance around the table. The other four players’ faces indicated that they were far less confident concerning the darkness spell’s success.
Umpteen looked at the graveyard bumbus and asked, “Are you really sure you want to do this?”
“Yep,” the bumbus replied, “my darkness spell should stop the pumpkin seer right in its tracks!”
Umpteen spoke. “You cast your spell of darkness on the pumpkin, completely shrouding it in a sphere of darkness.”
“Ha-ha!” laughed the graveyard bumbus. “Now the pumpkin can’t use her seer powers on us!”
“Yeah, but now we can’t see the pumpkin in order to attack her!” an angel charlie retorted.
‘Just attack the lizard then,” replied the graveyard bumbus.
And that’s what the other party members did. Everyone turned their efforts toward defeating the taffy lizard. Umpteen however, was concerned. She had planned for these two enemies to play a crucial role in a later part of the adventure, so she needed to keep them alive.
When the enemies’ turn to attack came, Umpteen said the following: “The taffy lizard turns toward the sphere of darkness in the middle of the battlefield and extends her right arm into it.”
Everyone at the table quickly became bewildered.
Umpteen continued, “ The taffy lizard feels around the inside of the sphere until her hand detects something solid. She tightens her grip on the object and tries to pull it outside the sphere.” Gasps escaped from the table as Umpteen continued. “But the sphere of darkness moves alongside the direction that the taffy lizard is pulling. The lizard cannot extract her ally from the sphere.”
“Ha!” went the graveyard bumbus.
“So the taffy lizard gathers up all her strength and throws the sphere of darkness toward the mahar wizard,” Umpteen continued.
The graveyard bumbus’ face went white, for the mahar wizard was her character for the current campaign.
“The sphere of darkness crashes on top on the mahar wizard, trapping him inside with the pumpkin. The pumpkin sees the wizard and begins to attack.”
In the end, the bumbus’ character barely survived the battle. The pumpkin was able to see anything that was inside the sphere of darkness and was able to counter all the wizard’s spells due to her prediction powers. The wizard had no choice but to dispel his enchantment so the rest of the party could help him. The pumpkin seer and the taffy lizard were eventually fled, ending the encounter. The graveyard bumbus was clearly not amused by how the battle had turned out.
Such bizarre twists during a campaign were to be expected when Umpteen was the DM. Her campaigns typically contained twists on aspects she enjoyed from her favorite video games, TV shows and literature. Once the angel urubu had sent a massive boss against the party. This boss was a gigantic horned worm armed with a mysterious machine on his head. The party fought valiantly, but the horned worm turned the tables by launching spherical capsules at the party. These capsules were capable of capturing party members and rendering them incapable of fighting until they were released. In order to avoid capture, the players had to roll die to make a will save. If they rolled above a certain number, they would break out of the ball and avoid capture. Ultimately all the party members ended up captured by the boss’s spheres and were taken to his underground lair.
Eventually the party learned that the truth behind their capture. Someone was releasing apple-scented gas on random towns. Anyone exposed to this gas became mean and selfish. The horned worm had created the capsules as a method of protection against the wicked gas. The capsules could restore someone affected by the gas to their true self and make them immune to the gas from that moment forward. The worm had captured the party in order to create a group of heroes who could resist the power of the wicked gas and stop the spread of discord across the world.
That campaign ended up being the most beloved campaign Umpteen ever had as a DM. But no matter how well a campaign turned out, the angel urubu was perfectly content with using her imagination to create new worlds for others to explore.
